Better Books
Minedeas Entry
When I heard about this upcoming contest with the topic of Modding/Game Enhancement, I was immediately determined to think of a great addition to the game. Just a warning, the following paragraph consists of me explaining my creative process; So if you don't care or would like to just skip to my ideas, skim down to the next section. Creating any old Minecraft mod is not hard, just ask the authors of any ores mod or food mod. The truly difficult aspect of the modding 'business' is thinking of an original idea that no one has ever attempted. Another requirement that I typically follow is that the mod serve a functional purpose. An examples of a functional mod could be my Cage Mod is you don't know. So knowing my requirements for this contest I first looked around for obvious flaws in the game. I came across the texture for the bookshelf and thought, o Well the books look nothing like that texture do they?o When the writable books were added to the game ( I can't remember the update ) no one really noticed that the textures for the bookshelf were completely off. This gave me the idea for colored books, as well as a new bookshelf model. The idea for the map book came a little bit later. Truthfully I can not remember how I came up with that idea.
Colored Books:
Here is my proposed crafting recipe for the colored books:
These new looking books would be textured similarly to the leather armor. They would default to the brown color, and they would have the same colored texture scheme.
The New Bookcase:
The crafting recipe for the bookcase was a small issue. In the end I decided to keep it the same as it currently is. One key point is that it be made with empty, blank books. I then through together the quick block model seen below:
As you can see, the model shows a red, blue, and green book rendered. This is where my idea is all tied together. When you right click the bookcase, one book will be de o rendered from the block, then that book will be added to your inventory. You can then right click the block with the book again to add it back to the block. But the big picture here is that the colors of the book will be rendered on the block. Pretty cool eh? Not only do bookcases look much better, but they will still function with the enchantment table too. This of course will only happen if all the books are added to the block. Bookshelves can also be used for decorative libraries with this mod. Here's some examples of the block in action:

I could see someone writing a library Bukkit plugin for this, allowing players to checkout and return books, charging them money for lateness.
The Book of Maps:
This idea is quite simple, yet it ties nicely into the whole mod. To make the book of maps, you would simply substitute maps for the paper in the book recipe. Here is the recipe:
Here is a picture of the book GUI (the real book would have more pages):
Final Notes:
I truly hope Mojang considers these ideas (even though they probably will never even read this). In the likely case that this is never implemented into the game, I hope that no one develops a similar mod, for I am hoping to pick it up as a project int the near future!
