*EDIT* this bug was fixed! It lasted from beta 1.8 to final 1.7 and was fixed in final 1.8. yay!
Sometimes it just seems so futile to submit bug reports to Mojang. They get inundated with "x doesn't work, halp!" posts. The odds of them even noticing a bug report that identifies an issue, the code that causes it and how to fix it are very low. Why even bother?
Anyway, have a look at this report: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-7508 Maybe upvote it or something.
Basically blocks at level x*16-1 are ignored by the heightmap, and can cause lighting glitches when the lighting engine doesn't think they are there. Build a flat single block thick roof at level 79 for instance. Nothing under it will be darkened. See some examples in the screenshots attached to the bugreport
I'll post future reports here too, if I make any.
