A while back I wrote an intro on here. (You can find it under 'what do you think?' on my blog) Recently I decided to continue it so here's chapter 1:
"George, have they achieved it yet?"
"No word yet."
He checked the monitor again. Surely they should of updated their status by now. They'd been in there for the greater part of an hour, yet there was still no word. George was an anxious person naturally, he knew missions like this would push him into an early grave. Laura was the polar opposite, stable, confident, the perfect person for mission control, some had even penned her for leadership if Cable ever stepped down or became incapable. He stared at the screen again, it was a jumble of green and black representing the yet-to-be completed Kabrine Stadium that was to host the Nova games later this year. The resistance had already performed sabotage missions on it in the hope that other countries might see their desperate situation and help. But that was why they called hope 'hope'. It's something that got you up in the morning but remained forever unattainable. Suddenly, Laura's head was raised like a meerkat's when a snake appears near it's colony.
"I think I heard something." She whispered.
George froze, intently trying to hear any sound coming from outside their van. It reminded him of when he was little and he used to read under his bedcovers, if he heard a sound on the stairs then he would freeze and listen closely in case his mother was coming.
"Drive, drive!" Laura was screaming at him quietly.
George snapped out of his daydream, pulled on a balaclava and rushed to the driver's seat of the vehicle. The engine started with a fierce growl and he pressed the pedal to the floor, hard. The van squealed and skidded slightly as he whipped it into moving. They had a plan for situations like this. First, they'd drive to the field by the cemetery and ditch the van, leaving a little surprise in there for any curious Children. Then they would sprint into the forest at the back of the field where they would hide until The Children had been discouraged by their 'present' in the van. After they had gone, the control team would enter The Den through the hidden entrance in the forest.
They turned the corner, nearly tipping the van and skidded to a halt. They weren't at the field. They were surrounded by Children. George's eyes widened as he realised that all the stories he had heard were true. He didn't have time to widen them very far, however, as they opened fire on him. He died with his mouth agape and blood frothing out of it. His balaclava had turned a deep crimson.
