Cold, senseless void. That’s all I saw for six, maybe seven hours. I counted the seconds, at first. That ended up being too hard; I started estimating the minutes. When it was finally over, I was met with a dazzling light, which slowly faded until I was met with a peaceful forest.

It wasn’t my world, but it was a world that offered hope. My world had been condemned; it was racked by a disease that threatened to wipe out my people. I was one of the lucky few researchers that got a chance to work on this project; a project to escape to an alternate world.

The idea was simple, really. Create a virtual world where our minds could live on as code while our bodies rotted in the real world. We spent our time writing programs, data, models; all the things we needed to create our expansive new world. We added familiar animals – cows, sheep, pigs, horses; the monsters though, we didn’t create. I think when our minds were converted to data, our nightmares glitched into the entity files.

Six of us – we were all that could enter. The best were chosen; we were the strongest, smartest, and most importantly, we knew the most about this world.

When we woke up, after our hours of cold, senseless void, we banded together and set off into this world. For a time, we were happy, until the unthinkable happened.

It was about two months after our arrival. We were sitting down for dinner, when we heard a scream from upstairs. We dashed up, and were horrified to find the youngest of our group, Robin, sitting on the bed, her leg glitched with black and green computer code.

We knew immediately what was happening. The virus, the one that had destroyed our home world, had infected her mind – we had left the physical world too late. It only got worse – her arms, legs, eyes, they all began to disappear over the next couple of days. Too weeks after we first diagnosed her, she was gone – I remember her last words: “Don’t forget me. I never asked for this.”

It wasn’t even a week before the next incident. This time, it was Austin, our long term boss. The disease struck harder for him; he was gone within a matter of days. He told us “Good Luck; it’s a cruel world out there.”

Nick was gone not long after Austin. Less than two days after, in fact. I think that he had been infected for days, though; I noticed him covering his arm. When he died, he had already been unconscious for a few hours – he had no last words for us.

Three weeks passed, and Alex, Lauren and I thought that perhaps we would be the lucky three survivors. However, one morning Lauren and I woke up, and Alex was gone. We searched frantically, but Alex was gone. To this day, I’m not completely sure if Alex died; perhaps she’s still out there somewhere.

A month passed, and life continued normally, for Lauren and I. We were happy and content. The months went by; five or six at least. Then, one day, we were walking through the forest, and saw something on a nearby tree.

It was glitched code; like when our friends died. We watched it for a few minutes, and it spread up the tree, and down toward the ground. The world was dying; we were trapped with no means of escape.

We ran back towards the house, and when we were nearly there, Lauren tripped, and her shoe came off – and revealed the virus on her foot. I cried out, and ran towards her, but she told me to stay back. She said: “It’s too late. You’re not infected yet – you have a chance. Our glitch has spread to this world, but if we reset the server, the world will be debugged, and you’ll have a chance.”

I stammered hopelessly. “But… you’ll die,” I managed to say.

“I’m already done for. Go, make me proud. If Alex is out there, find her. Live on...” She paused, then she said: “Command – Code 67 – reload world data.”

“Lauren, no!” I shouted, before I was once again plunged into cold, senseless void.

I've just released the first follow-up blog: Days of Minecraft.
This blog includes two stories: Song of Remorse, and Lonely Days.
Song of Remorse is told by Herobrine, Lonely Days is told by Steve.

I will be exploring the possibility of Alex's return in a future story arc.

I'm sure this question will come up at some point - yes, I will be including Herobrine in this universe. No, he will not be like the Herobrine that everyone knows and loves/hates - he will be much more developed than that.

Pop Reel in less than two hours! I'd like to thank everyone for their continued support, and I promise that I'll be continuing this story arc in the near future - I've already got a short monologue drafted and that should be finalized in the near future (& I'll need to design a cover for it)

I'd beg you to reconsider your opinion. The two have similar circumstances and concept - nothing more. Mine's more about the emotional ties and tragedy between the group - its also more minimalist. Plus, even from the core situation, mine's about the apocalypse of an entire civilization, your's is the saving of a single man. Really, the only shared feature is the virtual world.

I do like your blog though - it's very well written, and I do like the concept - after all, I wouldn't have used this concept if I didn't think it was a superb situation for this story.
