Server Creation
So, some of you probably have thought about creating a server and build a community from the ground and up? Well, hopefully this article will be able to help you on how to do so with a good guidance knotted to it. Stay tuned


The Server
Many have bought dedicated servers and even several VPS' from people and host their minecraft server from there, but it all comes down to your initial though on what to use it for. If you desire to create a minigame server or factions maybe I would recommend dedicated or VPS'. The only time you should host from your personal computer is when you're going to play with some of your friends. Some might disagree, but thats the safest method to avoid getting DDOSed and having the server attacked.
You can purchase a server for a small amount of $, just give it a google search and find the one that fits your needs.

Community
Communities are a big part of the server since it is the playerbase, which is the reason it is noted on this list.
You should have a good staff team. Someone who knows how to do the job correctly and not act like a child. If you are not mature you shouldn't host a server in the first place. Do research before creating it. You can gather staff member from this website and probably many others. Friends and family shouldn't be made staff unless you trust them. Kicking a friend or family member from the staff can be hard, and which can be very bad for your community if this person is abusing.

As an owner you should make the server interesting and appealing to all new people, make it simple and easy to get what the server is going for and not requiring them to go through a whole page on how to play on it. Make it appealing aswell, get someone to help you on deciding which look and theme you should get for your server. Hubs/Spawn areas are important as it is the first impression on the server, however I personally doubt it is needed to spend hundreds of dollars on a hub, try to get someone to help you out, there is a lot of nice people out there in the world.




The Content
Everyone plays minecraft because they seek fun, therefore they are trying to find something different and fun. If you're thinking of creating your server from the bottom. Don't create a minigame server like any other unless you have experience in coding which you can use to create custom stuff. I would suggest new server owners to google around, search around the webs to find stuff. You can also create your own server which I will create another article about on how to. (Link coming soon)

If you're unsure on what to create put yourself in a players position. What would I like to play on? What do I enjoy? Enjoy survival games? Create a survival server or something relatively close to it, but keep it under control. Do not let your entire server be a bug fest, missing permissions, ability to join games, teleport to worlds if needed ... the list goes on.

How to make a server on your PC.
So, I've helped many friends of mine to help making servers so here is how to.

Download Spigot, Craftbukkit, Bungeecord or anything else from that category. (Give it a quick google search to find it)
Put that .jar file into a folder on your computer.
Make a text document and type the following inside:
Go in the left upper corner and click "Save As"
Type in the following as the name of the text document: "run.bat"
Save it and open the .bat file
This should open a command prompt and it will close forcing you to enable the EULA which is located in another text document inside the folder with your run.bat file.
Now you can add plugins, change settings and other desired settings for your personal preference.

My suggestion is to create a server on your computer to configure and customize your server before purchasing one, this would help you in the long run as you would have more experience in server creation.



FTP and Configuring

If you have purchased a dedicated server from a hoster you can use FTP to transfer and edit files in that program. Some of these programs like FileZilla will make it much easier for yourself to transfer and edit because you will have much more control all in all.
For instance here is an example:

Here you can see how the FTP Client works and how it can be easier than any other transfering way. If you choose to directly tranfer from the hosting website you'll have to zip a file then push it into a long loading screen where you would upload files. FTP is in general faster in my opinion.
