Warning: Some descriptions of blood and violence in this story

It was a cold, snowy day, and I was home from school with a cold. With a warm red blanket wrapped around me, I decided to get up and play Minecraft on my laptop. I opened the metallic black laptop and logged in. I was about to start playing Minecraft, but before I opened my Minecraft shortcut on my desktop, I thought about something. Minecraft version 1.2.5 had been out for a while, and it was getting a bit stale, so I thought of downloading a new mod for the game. I had an idea in mind for what kind of mod I wanted to add; A mod that would add a new goal to the game . I typed "Minecraft 1.2.5 Missions mod" into the Google search bar, and the very first result caught my attention. The first result was titled "The Herobrine's Commands Mod for Minecraft [1.2.5]" on the Minecraft forums. The mod had been posted that day, and had no real info listed on what it does, just a download link and installation instructions. Being an idiot and not thinking about viruses, I downloaded the mod. I installed the mod and proceeded to start a new world. The message "Loading the commands of God" came up overlaying the dirt background. The screen froze at this odd message and I said to myself:

"*sigh* I should have seen this coming....Oh well *coughs* I suppose I will restart the game and try again."

I restarted Minecraft and attempted to log in. I couldn't log in, the snow outside had blocked my internet signal, so I just played offline. I was shocked to see the world I had tried to generate was there and ready for use. I clicked on the world and the regular "building terrain" message went by. After the terrain was built, I was met with a black screen. I was just about to click the X button to close the Minecraft window, But I was stopped by a single Ghast scream that echoed as I jumped back in my chair. This had startled me so much, I dropped the blanket I had wrapped around me. I put my blanket on the couch, and then walked back to my laptop that was sitting at my dining-room table. I found that Minecraft was working just fine again, and that my new world had been created successfully. I spawned in a Plains Biome that seemed to stretch on forever with one lone tree in the distance. I took a step forward and something came up in the chat box at the bottom left of my screen.

"Your first Mission: Prove your worth." was what the message said in dark red letters that appeared in the chat box.

I didn't know what the hell it meant, so I just continued as if I was playing in a normal Minecraft world, hoping to eventually see how I could "Prove my worth" to this "unknown" character. I knew that message was supposed to be from Herobrine, it seemed obvious with the mods name and all. After about two hours of normal Minecraft gameplay, I had constructed a house, dug a mine, and made a Nether portal with the bucket method. I was down in the mine in search of a bit of coal, but i found something much better.

"Diamonds!" I exclaimed as I swung my Iron pickaxe.

It was a vein of 6 diamonds, not a bad find at all. When I picked up the diamonds, another message popped up. I had almost forgotten I even had a mod installed. The message said:

"Ah, you have done well, Steven. I think you're ready to receive the divine power. Come to the Point of the Beginning to get your gift from God."

Let me just say, my name is NOT Steven, that's the name of the default Minecraft character. Anyway, I was excited to see this "gift from God." I had assumed this "Point of the Beginning" was the spawn point, so I proceeded out of my mine and to the spawn. When I emerged from the ground, I was stunned to see a tall cone-shaped mountain covered in ice and snow in front of my Blocky wooden home. At the top of this massive structure, I spotted a small reddish-brown block. I was impressed with the mountain.

"Wow! This modder is aweso-" I was cut off by my own coughing before I could express my approval for this mod... My approval that soon turned to horror.

I climbed the mountain up to the odd-colored block at the peak. I finally reached the block and was... a little discouraged by what I saw. The odd block was a chest with red splatter marks on it... it looked like the chest was coated in blood. When I right clicked the chest, yet another message popped up, this time, with the name of who has been talking...
The message read:

"Lord Herobrine: The last person who had earned my gift, didn't accept it. What is on this box is all that is left of that fool! He learned my identity and betrayed me, he had to die... Question is... What is your response to my kindness?"

After this was said, I was forced into the chat menu and had to type something. This may sound odd, but I was actually angry.
I typed out my TRUE answer to his question:

"This world is for freedom and creativity! You WILL NOT control me and my dreams, Herobrine!"

I was about to hit enter and send this bastard my message, but then, I thought about what I was about to do.

"Hmmm... Well ... I DID get this mod to add a new goal to the game... If I don't fulfill Herobrine's wishes, what was the point of getting the mod?"

I erased my words and replaced them with a simple "Yes."
Herobrine then said:

"Ah, good choice."

And the chest opened. inside was 64 Golden Apples, 6 Eyes of Ender, and an item I had never seen called "Divine Knife", which looked a little like an iron sword only shorter with no cross-guard. I took the items out of the chest then yet another message came up:

"Lord Herobrine: Now go! Kill the one that challenged your God's might! Kill the one called Ender Dragon!"

I then set out to kill the Ender Dragon with the eyes Herobrine provided ... I had no clue what was going to happen next... If I would have, I would have just stopped right there and gotten rid of the mod.

I finally reached where the eyes had been leading me. To my surprise, there was nothing but a single square of End Portal on the grass in front of me, no stronghold or anything. I walked into the square. Instead of saying "downloading terrain" the portal message read "Fulfill Your Destiny, Steve!" for about 3 seconds before I entered the End dimension. When the End loaded, I was confused. The land was all a flat bedrock strip that was only about five blocks wide and about twenty long. The Ender Dragon flew at me with full force. Without thinking of how much damage it would deal, I left clicked at the dragon with my Divine Knife. Suddenly, the game began to move in fluent slow motion. The knife swung and the dragon flashed red. The Ender Dragon suddenly fell to the ground, with its head facing away from my view. I was stunned. I had beaten the dragon before, and this never happened, it usually disappeared in a purple light, this time, it just fell. Another message popped up in the chat box.

"Lord Herobrine: Haha! Great job, Steven! You have pleased your God. Now, finish this pathetic lizard off once and for all!"

I walked over to the Dragon's head.... Its eyes... They were different... They looked so real ... So... Innocent.
I clicked on the poor giant's face and closed my eyes. I heard a slice, a long roar of pain, another slice, and then silence... dead silence... I opened my eyes, looked at the screen, and found myself back at my humble Minecraft home standing over my bed. I took control of Steven once more. I walked outside, and looked at the mountain that had once impressed me, but now haunts me. The sky was dark and the colors of the land had faded to grey. All of the pigs and sheep in my farm were no longer there, and the trees I had planted burned brightly with blue fire. Tears ran down my face...
I realized what I had done... I murdered an innocent creature that was defending the world from this evil...and for what? to be the last living thing in Minecraft? No messages came up, but i knew my final mission... Kill Herobrine...

I climbed up the mountain one last time to face this monster. There he was... where a bloody box once stood, an eyeless demon now looked over the devastated land. A string of dialogue then took place between Herobrine and this "Steven" character I had been playing the role of. This time, I typed my real responses:

"Lord Herobrine: Look at it. The beautiful artwork you've created, Steven. The world is all ours now! That dragon had stopped me for years, but now... nothing can stop me."

"Steven: I didn't want this."

"Lord Herobrine: I know... You didn't know what you were doing, you acted on impulse, and you're regretting it, aren't you, Steven?"

"Steven: yes."

"Steven: You're going to die you evil BASTARD!!!!"

The Screen then went into a face view of Steven with Herobrine's back facing the camera. I had no control. With tears in my eyes I watched this brutal cut-scene transpire. Steven Ran at Herobrine with the Knife but Herobrine punched him back. I quickly hit the escape button to leave the game, but a dark voice "THERE'S NO ESCAPE!" and I couldn't look away from this horrific scene. Herobrine lifted his right hand, and as he did, Steven stood up. Herobrine lowered his right hand and began to raise his left. This time, Knife in Hand, Steve followed the movement of Herobrine's Left hand with his hands. The camera switched back to the first person view from Steven's eyes. Herobrine now stood with both hands at his side and said "Goodbye, Noble Warrior." The Knife Steven had gripped with both hands plunged towards the screen... The Screen went black once more... The credit music began to play, stopped, and then began playing backwards. As the music progressed, and my teardrops hit the table, an image faded in from the black. it was an image of Steven... He was lying down with the knife sticking out of his chest and blood on his cyan shirt. Herobrine stood over him with that same expression he always had... Steven's death meant nothing to him... Then... Herobrine looked at me... the real me....

I heard Herobrine say "wake up...."
And...
He was gone...
The screen was all gone. Nothing but keys.
I lifted my head up and rubbed my eyes.
"Was it all a nightmare?"
"I just fell asleep playing Minecraft? That wasn't real?"

I looked at the screen. it was the Minecraft crash-log screen saying that the mod hadn't worked.
I had to be sure... I needed to see Steve alive again... My internet was connected again, so I updated Minecraft, signed off, and started it up offline. I went to play one of my worlds... My heart skipped a beat when I saw the world I had generated with Herobrine's command. Trembling, I opened the world. I was at the point when I has just found diamond. I slowly hit the inventory key to see if Steven was there.
...
A single tear went down my face... not one of sadness, i was overjoyed to see Steven alive and well.

I exited the menu, and proceeded out of the mine.
The mountain... it... it was still there...
"But... how?"

I looked at the top of the mountain, there was nothing there....
I decided to check to see the mod on the forum. I couldn't find it anywhere. It had just vanished without a trace. I couldn't find it in my downloads, either. It was as if it never existed.

Life has gone on as normal since then. I still play Minecraft... but... I still think to myself, was it a dream? Where the commands of Herobrine something I really experienced? To this day, I just don't know.
