Emeralds is a new ore that is going to be added in minecraft 1.3.0.
I have researched them a bit and here is some info I found.
Fact 1: They can be mined with a iron pickaxe.
Fact 2: They have no use as of 1.3 except that you can make an emerald block with them and that you can trade them with NPC villagers.
Fact 3: They are 25% rarer than diamonds.
Fact 4: The emerald ore has a diffrent texture than all the other ores.
Fact 5: In the update 1.4 there is some people saying Jeb is going to add emerald armor and tools.
