Finding Diamonds

I got minecraft the saturday before last saturday but I've only found 15 diamonds... WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!?!? Or right... my friend has had the game for three weeks and hasn't found and diamond OR gold. Whats up with that? I really need to know so if you guys could help out that'd be great. Also check out my account for a kewl texture pack. (Need 350 characters.)

Wow I found another 2 on layer 10 thanks guys! So far I have a Sword, Pick, and a bunch of other tools in diamonds. I've had the game for 10 days and I've already foun 17 diamond with additional diamond tools.

nice and I just found 2 more diamond look on layer 10 and i have 27 gold. lol i mine all the time. (DIAMOND PICK OWNS!

the way i search for diamonds is, i tunnel down periodically checking F3 to keep tabs on my elevation, once i get to layer 10, i start mining in different directions and on other levels (highest level of 16)
diamonds can occur at levels lower than 10, but my experiences tell me about levels10 - 16 are the best for mining through,
gold is about the same only you can go all the way up to layer thirty in mining for gold from layer zero (or ten if you take my advice)

first of all u have to know that diamond can occur between layer 0 and 16, 0 is at the very bottom of the map and bedrock only occur at layers 0,1,2 and 3, but the most commonplace layer you want to search for diamonds are layers 10 through 16..
now, gold can spawn from layers 0 to 30, but my opinion is start at layer 10 through 30, just so that even if you dont strike gold you may stumble upon diamonds.. or vice versa..
