I was getting worried.

There were rails outside of town. They passed over the sea.

But the sea was dangerous.

The dead infested it, carrying anyone who came near into the water to drown and join them.

Grace was trying to get the villages to let her use the tracks, but they she needed to pay.

Grace had forced me to get rid of everything we owned except for her sword and armor and my book and quill.

We came down to an meeting by some cages.

Inside were great iron creatures, overgrown with moss.

“Golems, great men of iron who defend the weak,” said the cleric, “imprisoned by those “illagers”.”

“Illagers?” Grace asked.

“They used to be the greatest among us, our warriors. But the Empress seized them, took away their compassion, and sent them here to look after us.”

We should free them, I thought. But Grace would he outnumbered.

That night, Grace and I debated whether or not to go a longer way, around the sea, in hopes it may lead us to the Empress.

“No.” She said, “we can beat these things!”

“Maybe if we had the villagers help, but I don’t see that occurring.”

“The golems?”

“If we went anywhere near those things I’d die by crossbow.”

I awoke the next morning from a brilliant dream of my youth, to a knock on the door.

Grace had gotten up too.

“Hello?” She opened the door.

“I am the Evoker, leader of Walltown.” He was an illager, “we have, as a village, decided to take you into our custody. You be able to get across the sea… and die in it.” He smiled.

Grace drew her sword, but vindicators and pillagers had already broken in.

“Lower your weapon.” The evoker ordered.

“HELP!!” I screamed.

“To the dungeons.” Ordered the evoker.

We marched down the town.

I felt the vindicator’s ax against my back.

Suddenly, Grace wrenched it (and a few emeralds) from his hand, and began beating the illagers to death.

Arrows flew into her, and I was terrified, boxed into a corner.

“Kill them now!” The evoker screamed.

The pillagers were about to launch a volley when they were sent flying.

Iron golems had been freed by some villages in the confusion, and they quickly dealt with the army.

The evoker sent out flying things to vex us and sent huge arms to my legs, but me and Grace defeated them.

“Run!” The evoker yelled, “retreat, do not her take the carts!”

An iron golem sent him into a wall.

Grace pointed her sword at him.

“Surrender?”

He clutched a golden object, and ran away, through the gawking crowd.

“He’ll probably be telling the Empress about us,” I said.

“Let him.” Grace answered.

That night we were celebrated with fireworks.

“The golems will defend us,” said the cartographer, “but you must free our neighbors from this southern terror.”

“I will.” Grace said, “and replace her as the benevolent ruler.” She murmured so that only I could hear.
