Lily was frozen. Something just wasn't right. She had that feeling that you get when your in a bad dream. But it was different. It was... real. Now, there was a man at the circus. his name was Zephyr Blackthorn. Once celebrated as a brilliant illusionist, Zephyr Blackthorn’s dazzling talent captivated audiences in the mortal world. But fate took a dark twist when he was forcibly conscripted into Hell’s Circus. Bound by a ruthless pact with the Jester, Zephyr is compelled to perform his magic every night—failure is not an option. If he falters or even refuses to take the stage, death is certain, and any missed act brings excruciating, unbearable pain. Dressed in a sleek black suit with a red tie, a striking red cape draped over his shoulders, white gloves, and a finely tipped top hat, Zephyr masks his torment behind an air of elegance. His glowing orange eyes betray the fear and determination hidden beneath his composed exterior. Each performance is a high-stakes dance with fate: his flawless illusions are both a means of survival and a covert expression of rebellion. With every trick he executes perfectly, he defies the cruel curse that binds him, fueling his secret hope of one day outsmarting the Jester and breaking free from the circus’s infernal grip. Now, as the curtains rise and the dim stage lights reveal his mesmerizing form, Zephyr’s act becomes more than mere magic—it transforms into a silent, dangerous vow. Every dazzling flourish is a reminder of his enduring resolve: one day, he will reclaim his freedom and escape the nightmare of Hell’s Circus. One night, as Zephyr walked out onstage to perform his illusions, he tripped on the old broken down wooden panels on the steps up to the old (but seemingly new) stage. Lily was just finishing sweeping the dust off of the abandoned bleachers. She saw this happen and then saw the jester suddenly look very displeased. She watched as the Jester walked over to the Circus Master and whisper something quietly in his ear. She didn't know what, but she could tell it was something quite menacing. After the performance, Lily snuck out and went to where the Circus Master's tent was. She stood outside of the white and red striped tent fabric, staying hidden, and listened. She heard the Circus Master and the Jester discussing what had just happened. "You know as well as I that Zephyr is on the verge of his breaking point. Don't push it. It'll send him off the edge and into the deep end just like your twisted little... THING of an apprentice." "Well..." the Jester paused. "you know as well as I that now that the little... what do you call them? Ah yes. Children. Now that the child Lily is here, he may try to team up with her and try to escape. AND you also know as well as I that you are not TRULY in charge of this circus. You also know why Cora went off the edge now don't you?" "Well yes. I mean, she saw what really happen-" the Circus Master paused. "She is listening." "So what, the child will learn why Cora went off the edge. Then she'll seek that place to see and she will fall off that cliff as well." The Jester responded. Lily was frightened. She knew something wasn't right. Why couldn't she remember anything before this? Why was she trapped here? Why... why could she almost feel a prescence lurking in the deep, dark, cold shadows? What happened to Cora? What did she learn? Lily was determined to find out. But, she knew something wasn't right. What would cause her to go off the edge? She would seemingly never know. But something tells me that me, the teller of this story, knows more about what Lily saw at the end of her journey than even she knew. She would snap before she could share it. So how do I know? Because I watched myself go through the same thing. And I met myself at the end of that road. Who am I? That's a story for next time.
