Help with reducing lag?

I have been playing minecraft for over a year now and I am still having trouble with massive ammounts of lag. I have already tried turning my render distance to tiny and my graphics to fast, but I am still getting a rediculous ammount of lag. Are there any mods that anyone has made that could reduce lag for minecraft 1.2.5? I am open to any and all suggestions.
