A texturing/modding journey from newbie to...?

Hi every1 and any1 :) im pretty new to minecraft but totally addicted! Basically i now want to get into modding and texturising and so this blog will cover my learning and endevours. At the moment i know zero about texturising save for having been pointed to 'gimp' which a friend of mine has and is about to show me so here i go! please if you are reading this and are a modder/texturiser too and have any tips/advice for me - dont hesitate to message me cos i really would appreciate any help i can get!

On a side note i have just finished another project called 'Starclaws' which is basically a bunch of cats meowing the starwars theme :) check out:

Also - now that i have edited the torches i can see that there is some sort of dimension problem, the game wants them to be 2x2 but i want to do them fatter and thus the game cant show 2 sides at once so they look crap...any ideas???

I can send u some pics labeling the different parts of mobs (head,headside,legs ect.) if it is helpful

also if you type in "minecraft 1.7.3 hd textures" , you can find all resolution deafault textures to start from.

thanks so much thats awesome! i want to keep the original resolution as i feel the simplicity of minecraft is one of its most endearing aspects :) And its easier lol! I believe i have settled on a final flavor to use too:

gothic horror - lots of grey and washed out greens, purple and browns. I want to change all the skins, textures and items. what do you think? Do you think paint.net is a good programme to use or can you recomend another? Thanx Sum :)!!!!

I recommend gimp, as it's free, easy, and seems to work well for pixel art (just my opinion though). That sounds like a good theme. I suggest looking at other packs such as the wayukian pack, and the eldpack. Not to use their textures or anything, but to copy their styles for shading and stuff, it can be really useful early on. Oh, and of course when you get close to releasing something, credits, permission, etc are always a must for any textures donated to a pack by others. Good luck! :)

Yo Sum! thanx for your last comment, i have downloaded gimp and also have checked out the eldpack you recommended - i love the look and the gui's in eldpack - just the thing! i have been tinkering with gimp and i must say its a lovely programme thanx for the recc :) i have done a door which i really like and changed the grass and torches and windows. tell me what u think! will post now...thanx!

looking good! I suggest making the door slightly brighter, and adding some metal to the torch, like an iron band around the lower part of it... more to give it some detail than anything else.

groovy :) i had so much trouble changing the grass colour lol! till i found the grass colour .png hidden in misc lol! i will get on those suggestions tomoro asap :) thanku Sum!
oh ps - How do u do the mob skin editing as i cant work out which bit is which easily - there must be a simple way...???
