Have you considered a fishing rod? Also, the string on a bow is pretty thick, so I think steve just doubles/triples it up to make it thicker.

I just thought of something. The bow would probably be the size that it would normally be, because strings aren't elastic, and you cant pull regular string back and let it go and expect the arrow to fly... so he probably weaves them in a certain way (Not exactly sure how elastic or stuff like that is made), and then by the time its all weaved up, it's probably the size of the bow. (And if you want to be REALLY technical, the bow wouldn't work at all, the arrow would stick to the string, because it came from a spider...)

Also, since it takes 4 string to make a wool block, and a piece of string (the item) is about 2.4 meters long, that would mean that 9.6 meters of string go into 1 block of wool... so instead of it being like this:
0 = Steve's head
|| = Steve's body
O = Wool block
U = Half a wool block
