Hey guys, ito s Matt, and I am bringing you my FIRST EVER BLOG: How to Administrate a Server Effectively and Efficiently! I'm not sure how common this topic is, but I guess I'll see depending on how much hype this blog gets ;) And don't get me wrong, I am not setting this up to be on the reel or anything, but if I see 5 diamonds on this I will be ecstatic xD And just a fair warning, if my grammar isn't the best, I apologize, I am trying my hardest here. So, without further ado, let's get started!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point #1: Getting Started. (For owners only!)

Every server has to start somewhere, and for most servers, this "somewhere" is at the lowest of the low. Most of the time, this means having 1/20 players online, or something of that sort. But, before you even start up your server, you are going to want to compile a list of plugins that will help you manage your server the best, and at the same time making it fun for the players on the server. Choosing what type of server is helpful here: Survival, Creative, Roleplay, Tekkit, and etc. (I am assuming it is a Bukkit server). After you have your plugins all ready and configured, you should make banners, forums, maybe even a website, in order to promote your server. Make them look pretty! Appearance counts for EVERYTHING, as players want a professional server to play on, and if you are going to want donations, this becomes even more important. Finally, have a few helpful moderators and administrators ready to help the incoming default ranked players. I will go over how to choose players for these positions later. Finally, you are ready to start up your server! Post your details and IP address on different websites, and be prepared for these new players to start rolling in!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point #2: Choosing Staff.

This part of server administrating can be tough, as a lot of the time owners don't know who to trust with the power of a ranked position. Here are some of the do's and don'ts of choosing staff:

DO: Choose long-time friends from real life.

DO: Choose long-time TRUSTWORTHY friends online.

DO: Choose people with good grammar.

DO: Choose older people (Preferably 16+)

DON'T: Choose people with bad history with you and others on your server.

DON'T: Choose young, immature people with no experience or morals.

DON'T: Choose people "dat tak liek dis".

DON'T: Choose newcomers right off of the bat. Get to know them a little more before appointing them as staff.

Well that basically sums up the "Choosing Staff" part of this blog, and always ask yourself this question before appointing someone as staff: "Do I really want this person representing me and my server while I am not around?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point #3: Assigning Punishments/ Making your Rules

A key part of your server is your rules. They give people a first impression of you and what you expect of your server and the players on it. One important aspect of your rules is to make them as clear as possible. Players look for loopholes and ways they can get away with doing stupid things. All servers basically follow an "unwritten code", or set of rules, that they have. Don't let this get to you! Make the rules according to what YOU want for your server! Another topic that goes hand-in-hand with your rules is the punishments for rule-breaking. Don't make punishments too harsh, as this drives players away, but on the other hand you still want to make the rule-breakers feel sorry and shame for what they have done. A popular way of doing this is to have a jail. Be creative with your jail! One last side note with this section is that you don't want to be the administrator or moderator that everybody hates! Be nice and funny, but also get serious when things need to get serious.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point #4: Activity and Participation.

One of the most frustrating things that I see in server staffing is inactivity. Why be in a position of authority if you can't handle the responsibilities that come with it? Also, this goes along with being friendly to new players. Talk to players and hang out with them! I know from experience what it feels like to have an owner and admins hate you and not want to be around you, which really does hurt one's feelings. But, I also know from experience how awesome it can be to have everyone be friendly to you on a server! The former wants to make you quit the server, while the latter really wants to make you come back and have fun on the server. Another good point to make here is not to act on first impressions. Just because someone has bad grammar or isn't fun to be around doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad guy; maybe they are just having a bad day. One last thing to say to get involved in events! If you come up with a good event that a lot of people enjoy, get involved with them, and dono t sit on the sidelines! Players truly like these kinds of things, trust me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Point #5: Events!

The final topic for now is going to be about events! Events make up the core of friendship and good feelings in a server. They also drive people to come back day after day! Here is a small list of potential events to host in your server:

o Scavenger Hunts

o Hunger Games

o Spleef

o Parkour

o Building Contests

o Griefing Tournaments

o Roleplaying

o Hide and Seek

Depending on your preference, you may or may not like the griefing tournament idea, which is 100% fine with me. A key idea with events is to host them as often as possible! Encourage those unsocial people on your server to join in, and who knows, they could like it and make a couple friends in the process! The last thing I have to say is that you should have designated days and times for different events to avoid confusion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I really hope you guys like this blog. It took several hours to make and I put off some math homework to get it to you guys extra early ;) If I think of any more ideas I might make a second one of these, so to keep updated make sure to subscribe xD And if you liked this, consider giving it a diamond and maybe some likes and favorites? Thanks, see you guys later!

Cool blog this seems really cool! If there are ANY other people who read this remember: Do not spam servers because 1/100 people would go. Also it is very annoying and people might go on there to screw with you like spamming or griefing your server. But anyways what a great effort RacerMatt and keep up good work :3

I see your point Orange, but I was meaning how there are a bunch of forum posts saying "NEW SERVER LOOKING FOR ADMINS", and then a bunch of 11 year olds comment saying how they want to be an admin. But don't get me wrong, you make an amazing moderator on The Cube. Oh and thanks for the diamond!!!!! :D
