Hello Everyone! This is a tutorial on how to broadcast your server in an effective way other than spamming and becoming hated. The content is filled with tricky, out of the box, and popular ways to advertise.

*This has been fully typed out, researched and proven to be effective many times

Advertising on Other Servers:

First off, since I am talking about advertising, have respect for other servers: Do NOT advertise our server on other servers, that is just extremely rude. I have seen many people ranging from owner to unknown-default-player who have all advertised their (or their favorite server) on many other servers. Although this was showed and recommended before, just come to your senses as I did, and avoid this. It gives off a bad reputation for your server. Want players that are hard to get? Well work hard to earn them and shmooze them to join. Advertising on other servers… that is like a cardinal sin. Think about it this way: the owners are using a chunk of their paychecks to fund the server to give people a place to play on, but if you take away those players, all of their hard work and hard earned money is just all going to waste. If they worked so hard to get players, and have actually earned a high player count, that gives you no right to simply swoop in and advertise somewhere else for them to play on… just a small realization.

Forums and Sites:

So, we are all familiar with PlanetMinecraft, MineStatus, and all the other popular forums and sites that drag in annoying kids most times. We don’t want the, “gimee op now or else”, type of kids. Although this is hard to prevent. I have seen many mature and quiet kids playing away on servers that are hassle free. The thing is, how to gain these players? Well first things first, create a large description or a list which will need to be composed (not in order, but advised) :

- Server Name

- Short description

- IP address (Duh)

- Website

- Screenshots

- Server rules

- List of all the server/website staff.

This gives a full and detailed display of our server, which is favored over the spam. May work, may not work, but it only hurts to try, and while doing it, be sensitive and reasonable!

Social Medias and YouTube:

Having friends is an easy way to have players join, not only that, but its more fun for you too! Being social and hands on with FaceBook or Twitter can be easily used to share server details, and hence, becomes a word of mouth. Also, constantly posting things and keeping fresh reminders or new updates and pictures so people can get a hold of a good idea of us. Another great asset to advertising is of course YouTube! Simple and videos on random things about Minecraft attracts players eyes to see steps how to do something or another example like server introductions. These can be direct or indirect. Just add an annotation with the servers IP and perhaps people will take a look since it was on a random video or a videos whose purpose was to do this. These small things spark curiosity, “ooh server, lemme try it out!” or “cool mob grinder trap. i wanna test it out somewhere, oh cool a ip. gonna use it there”. These are just some small things that can happen and make a change.

The Staff:

This is super important. The key to a good server is Staff. Staff should pay attention to other members of any rank of the server. Some servers may try to implement the hierarchical form of complaint handling (players report to mods, mods report to admins, and so on), but that method leaves some complaints to rot away and never get looked at, frustrating some players that might have needed something urgent looked at which then costs us to lose positive attitude and feedback. But then you might ask are the moderators for, well they play the game with no game-breaking permissions, but merely have the power to warn/kick/ban/mute (within reason of course, don't forget about fairness!). So when there are not any admins online, the moderators, which are higher in numbers than the admins, can ensure that at almost any time of the day, there will be at least one to enforce the rules which I notice, on my servers, are broken often. Even if some of the other staff doesn't like that moderator, he or she won't be demoted just because of a simple rant and hate. Hating powers you, positive atmospheres powers you; you only want the best. You can also be a part of this. Don't get involved with player squabbles. Players have a tendency to argue and fight, just notify Staff or just watch and take screenshots of the overwhelming conversation.. That's just the nature of a survival server; pvp and argue about hacks and cheats, etc. Usually evidence is provided, so be sure to clear that out with players. Usually, people put rewards for this kind of behaviour.

Harmful and Beneficial Changes:

Changes are always difficult to handle, from small plugins, to map and server resets, these impact the members the most I noticed from past experiences. You don’t want to bombard people with many things in a single day or two. When I was an admin on another server which was averagely popular, we added in some new plugins and things (don’t remember much), but I surely know what the results were: not pretty. The range dropped after a few weeks, and because of realization, we removed it and then we gained those players back with a couple of new ones. So make sure you stay attentive, have players give feedback on how you are doing, give ideas on what to add, etc.

Voting and Promotion:

Promoting servers is always a rough accomplishment, but with the work of many people the impossible become possible. I see people complaining from time to time how there aren't many people on the server. Although those members are helpful at times and want the best, they sometimes doubt themselves and may doubt you. Well, if you care about your server, how about put it to the test. This means participation, no slide bys, or faking the determination. Special people helped develop a voting system called a votifier which is popular among bukkit servers. They listed various types of websites, so that way when people vote for your server, you can get a little incentive each day. If you want to benefit the server and possibly meet new players, it's an easy click to the link, fill out the cache, and then vote. Now, since your players have done the job, devise a reward for these votes. Each time there is a vote issued, give the person a reward.

Remember and put these Tips and Tricks to use. There may be some positive outcome. Don't give up!
