You have to watch out for them, their camouflage will trick your eyes into thinking they are grass, or trees. They can sneak up behind you and "sssssssssssssss- BOOM!" blow up.
If you don't even have a sword or anything, you can still kill a Creeper, it's fairly simple, but a little terrifying.
First, if you see a Creeper coming up to you, it's all about timing. Wait until the right moment, then sprint and punch it, right in the face. It will be launched a little ways, and then it will come back at you. Repeat a couple of times until he dies.
