FINALLY!
I've been struggling with this problem for quite some time. Minecraft would load fine, then I'd get the maximum string length error that a lot of people seem to get. All you have to do is go to your .minecraft folder, copy the bin, then delete the file. DO NOT repaste the file you copied. ( the only reason you need to copy it is in case something goes wrong ) After this, open up minecraft and it will update on it's own. WARNING, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR WORLDS.
