Now, most of you reading this probably know that spike blocks/pistons were going to be added in Minecraft in Beta when Pistons were added. However, the Spike Block/Piston was replaced by the Sticky Piston due to the developers not knowing what to do with spikes.

Since recent updates have added loads of new things, I suggest adding spikes. I mean, come on! The possibilites of uses could possibly be endless.

Types of spikes:
Spike - Made from two iron in a vertical position on a crafting grid. Can be placed down on any face of a block.
Floor Spikes - The size of a layer of carpet or snow and can be used for dark rooms. Crafted from 3 Spikes in a horizontal line.
Spike Block - A full block of spikes that deals damage on all sides. 9 Spikes in the crafting grid.
Spiked Piston - Like a normal piston, but with spikes on the end. Yep. Piston + Floor Spikes

Spikes can be fired from dispensers, Floor Spikes degrade after several uses, Spike Blocks can be pushed by pistons (however they aren't as compact as Spiked Pistons, making the pistons have some use).

New Traps:
You could make a BUD switch that activates falling sand/gravel and the player lands on spikes. Similar to lava, but doesn't burn the items and can be placed side-by-side unlike cacti. Hoppers can pick up strewn items through the spikes.

Hidden dispensers fire spikes at players, dealing higher damage than arrows, however the spikes cannot be retrieved unlike arrows.

Make a Spiked Piston come out of a wall with other pistons, trapping the player and killing them in seconds by either suffocation or spikes.

Floor Spikes are well hidden in dark rooms or even on simple stone.

Spike Blocks under carpet can kill anyone walking upon it, since players walk on the block under carpet, rather than the carpet itself when the carpet is placed on a full-size block.

Defense:

Keep mobs at bay with traps or spikes on your walls.

See, the game could have lots of items and new redstone mechanisms, like simple auto-farms that don't destroy items or require lots of trial and error with water floods, some added difficulty to Jungle Temples and Desert Temples.

Albeit, there is possibly a mod(s) that has all of this included, but Mojang should add these into Vanilla, simply because the mod(s) wouldn't need to be updated with each new Minecraft version and you don't need to install any extra files into your game.

So, what do you guys think? Should spikes be added into vanilla Minecraft?

Just an FYI, Spike tiles were considered for Minecraft back in Alpha. They weren't added, however, for unknown reasons.
