Yep, you read the title right. The new snapshot 13w04a has now introduced keys!

"But wait", I hear you cry. "No they haven't, they introduced some more functions for dispensers and droppers, they made mobs scared of minecart rails and they added some new functions to command blocks, but they didn't add keys, what are you on about?"

Well let me give you a clue. The keys are round, mostly black and can make noise... Got it yet? That's right it's music discs...

"Huh, what are you on about?" Well let me explain. With the new snapshot, now when you place a comparator and then a line of redstone behind a jukebox, and then put a music disc in it it will output a redstone signal. The clever thing is that each music disc outputs a slightly different length redstone signal, meaning that it is possible to create locks/puzzles that can only be opened by a particular music disc using various logic gates, here's an example I made earlier: http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/keys-in-minecraft-1886551/

This now means that rather than having redstone torches, buttons or levers as keys, it is now possible to have many different keys, and locks, in a single map, which I'm certain will open up many different possibilities for adventure maps, puzzle maps and even multiplayer PVP maps.

The possibilities are endless...

A link has been added to a project I have created to demonstrate how keys can be used in minecraft. Please take a look. Also, if there is interest, I will develop a map that demonstrates the wide variety of uses for them.
