Some of you may know that I recently opened up my server to the public, Sweet N' Spelly! So I figured now is as good a time as ever to share my experiences with owning this server!
Since this is the first of (hopefully) many articles in this blog, I may as well start from before the server was Public.
Way back in the server's history we ran a 30 mod modpack, and originally the server was just for me and a friend to play on, however, the person who we pay to run the server for us told us that if we wanted we could make the server public and that he would support us fully with the endeavor! So we worked on the pack day and night and worked on adding some plugins so that the pack could work as a fully-fledged server. It was a total failure. We experienced non-stop crashes, playerdata had to be deleted NUMEROUS times, and at some point we had to wipe the world. And that's not good.
So throughout the month since that time we edited the pack more and more, hoping to get a more stable experience, eventually we did manage to do so! The pack is now fairly stable, there are occasional crashes, but all of them cannot be traced back to any mod in particular, and we now run ForgeEssentials for all of our moderation needs. It's no Cauldron, but it does the job extremely well!
Now to today. We booted it up, disabled whitelist and....! It was fine! It was working fine and so I made the dumb decision of attempting to use CraftBukkit, believing it to be CAULDRON. This ended up using two ports on the server host machines and made a Vanilla server hosted on the port supposed to be SnS'. Our first player from PMC was on the vanilla server, but due to the fact that we deleted that server's files, I cannot get their name, if you're reading this, please join back, you seemed really nice! Anyways, I had to go back to a Backup from a day prior and fix up everything, and voila it was on track once more! No one else joined today, not sure if it's a blessing or a curse, but I have a good feeling about this server, if I don't crash it again atleast.
