When you think about skinning, what comes to mind? Do you think cool and geeky skins or maybe teen and steampunk ones?  “Skinning is about making a pixeled blocky character” says Scarletbox, a very well respected skinner. Despite the multitude of recolors, traces, and stolen skins, PMC houses many unique skinners that have their own styles, views, and appreciation of skinning. Most people have their own process to making skins, and some learn from more experienced skinners. It really is its own complicated form of art.

But becoming well known in the huge skinning community is not an easy feat.

Scarletbox also said “There are so many new skinners nowadays and the quality average is better than past. But they probably have a hard time to getting the recognition because of the variety of shading style, ideas, originality, and other reasons.” Unfortunately, many new skinners do not realize how it is not something that can happen overnight, and this future potential is lost. Arty feels “there are so many skinners that I think receive recognition that I would prefer going to other people.”

“Some of them stopped or quit skinning when they weren’t getting recognition.”(Scarletbox)

The system PMC uses for skins makes it much easier to get deserving skins the views they deserve. Using tools like the pop-reel in both the skinning page and home page, diamonds, favorites, comments,  forum posts to share your newest skins, and the chat to advertise (every 15 minutes of course) skinners can be recognized and praised for the skins they create. “Overall though, Planet Minecraft has a great way of getting your name and your skins out there so as a whole I do think that skinners get the recognition that they deserve.”

Skinning isn’t easy, but the ability to see something that you created come to life, and even see others using on servers, keeps them going. Scarletbox says “Skinning can be called a process of creating an artwork in my opinion.” and that “Everyone has his/her own skinning style and I also have my style.”

So what makes a skin? A skin is a layout of the texture for the player models, and in order to work properly, must have the proper dimensions, and .png format. The skin layout as of before the 1.8 update is:

 undefined

And after the 1.8 update and above is more complicated, as now there are two ‘layers’ to a Minecraft skin:

 undefined

That’s it for this part. The second part will be released sometime this week. I hope you enjoyed this little behind the scenes of skin making, and thanks a ton to Arty and ScarletBox for taking the time to answer questions and give me some nice quotes to spice it up.

You've made over 200 noticed skins and only have 200 subs? I think that says how innefective your methods are. Advertising is really the best way to go. Keep going is a great idea, but the just 'wait and you'll get noticed' isn't very smart

i'm heading for the pmcer with the most submisions
and i am already in top 30
and i am the guy with the most submisions already who started in 2014
so for me thats a good way to get subs i learn from each skin and when i reached the most submisions i can make skins that are even better

Ugh, this is so true I'm going to cry.
If you don't mind I'm going to add a little bit of my experience with the skinning community.

Skinning is hard, and it took me about 4 months to even get on the popreel. However, the community's changed so much in the past year. When I first joined there wasn't many anime skinners so I had the upperhand there and the main focus was originality and non-character skins. Teenskins were still there, but not as common as they are now. However, the main focus on PMC is teenskins and a little bit of original skins. Another thing I noticed is how if you presented yourself as female you would get (basically) the same treatment as males who have the same talent as you did at the time. However, if you present yourself as female you gain waaay more subs than people who have the same talent but present themselves as males. Non-binary people don't even exist here, which is kinda sad but that's off-topic.  Skinning takes a LOT of work because you gotta moderate whos using your skins, what's the popular aspect of yourskin and how to use it, how many people are stealing your skins, is the shading good, etc.  Nowadays it's hard to get their own style as everyone's is starting to look alike...

That's all for my ranting which was longer than I expected..... oops
