I'm sure that a majority of people on PMC have gaming consoles but if you don't, then either do some research on the Lizard Squad or don't mind this blog post at all.
First off, think about this question, how do billion dollar companies get ddos'd by a small hacker group?
Let me restate myself, billion dollar companies.
Sony? Microsoft? Ever heard of them?
Ofcourse you have! These companies are very wealthy and have been around for quite a while.
Where am I going with this?
If you have any knowledge about owning a company or being a part of it, you would know that every company has to budget their money. Either to spend that extra money on research for their next phone or so a Microsoft executive can buy himself a Lambo. Well, Microsoft and Sony have become greedy and are stealing from us by providing cheap (aka crap) servers to players all around the globe and the Lizard Squad are simply trying to fix it!
If you follow the Lizard Squad on Twitter, they might seem like a bunch of a-holes and to be honest, I don't know whether or not they are but... I believe they have to do their best to seem like an idiot group so that people start hating them and Microsoft and Sony are forced to upgrade their servers to better protect against 'idiot' groups like them. Either way, even if they are or aren't a-holes, Microsoft and Sony are still forced to upgrade their servers.
And this is a good thing because better servers mean better gameplay, lesser lag, faster matchmaking, little to no downtime, lesser downtime, etc.
I can however see why most people are hating them for it but really, the blame is on Microsoft and Sony.
Also, another question, Why would you risk life in prison to shut down servers for a day?
Oh and why did they choose to attack the servers at the 'best' time ever, Christmas?
Think... again, most children, teens, men, and women get their presents (idk maybe something like an Xbox One or PS4?) on Christmas which means an increased amount of players. This is the perfect time for them Lizard Squad to attack. The time when everyone wants to play their newly-bought present (and if you've already had a next-gen console). The time when gamers will get furious at Lizard Squad for ruining Christmas (by shutting down game servers and making you spend time with family, what?).
My point is that the Lizard Squad is still really bad but Microsoft and Sony deserve to get hacked because of how they treat their players unless they give us like an extra day of xbl/psn which I highly doubt.
Microsoft/Sony treat their players like crap!
UPDATE: I just read this news article from 2 weeks before the attack!

They announced to attack the servers 2 weeks before it actually began which means Micorosoft (and sort of Sony) should have anticipated this to happen!

If you think that Microsoft and Sony have bad servers, why buy Xbox Live and Playstation Network in the first place? If you have such a problem with their servers, why would you buy the ability to use them? They aren't greedy, have you tried to run one of the biggest online gaming service recently? If they aren't good, suck it up, or write a letter.
The Lizard Squad are breaking the law, stop trying to rationalize it by saying that "Microsoft and Sony deserved it." They didn't.
The servers were taken down with an 85 mbps connection.
And they treat their players like crap.
And no I'm not blaming Microsoft and Sony, I just wish they'd treat their players a lot more.
I know that we DID choose to subscribe to their membership but that's not my point. They're treating us like crap even after we've chosen Microsoft over Sony and Sony of Microsoft. We're paying for their service! Least they can do is appreciate it.

I haven't had a problem YET, or just haven't had one at all.
So, I don't think they did anything,
or Microsoft just delt with it
They have a bunch of computers, attacking the service, and a lot of people use Xbox Live and PSN, becuase people are not careful online, they get infected and join this army they use to attack without the end user knowing it. LizardSquad built up a big army, without Microsoft getting attacked, I can get on my Xbox and sign into my Xbox Live at any time, due to the excellent service I pay for. I only experience downtime when they are being attacked.
And this is a good thing because better servers mean better gameplay, lesser lag, faster matchmaking, little to no downtime, lesser downtime, etc.
This pretty much depends on your device and internet. I have excellent gameplay, lesser lag, learn to grammar, any lag I get is due to MY internet connection, not microsoft or sony, but your internet connection. FAster matchmaking, depends on the amount of players, less = slower join, more = faster matchmaking, Better internet = faster matchmaking! Downtime from Microsoft and Sony is RARE, until they are attacked. Do you know anything about this?
By lesser lag, I mean more servers, which means there may be a new server that is much closer to you. Which decreases lag.
Also, you clearly have not followed up on the Lizard Squad's history.
These people have done this numerous times to the Xbox Live service.
Don't even get me started with Sony. They've had quite a lot of "maintenence" in the past .
And I was using the term 'hacker' so that the less-informed readers (maybe someone who just plays games and not know fadoodles about ddos attacks?) I know they are not hacking.
