Okay, so some people are having trouble with making texture packs. Here are some tips for making a texture pack.

  • First you have to find a good editing software to use. MS Paint is NOT a good editing software to use. A good and free application to use is Paint.NET. It is very easy to use and I use it too. And of course if you have the professional things like Photoshop you use that then

Steps on making a texture pack

  • First you have to pick a theme for your pack. A good starter is a "Basic theme" with one or two colours in a block. Then you will get used to making texture packs and you can do more advanced editing
  • Get an idea of what your texture pack will look like then you can start editing some files. A good file to start with is the "terrain.png" file found at the very bottom of the texture pack folder.
  • Start with the easy blocks like dirt and stone etc.
  • When you have finished all of those files you can start editing some GUI. Go to the GUI folder and in there is all the interface like the furnace and crafting table and the icons. This part is quite hard and will need some inspiration. Or of course you can skip this stage and leave the GUI as default.
  • A good thing to do next is to edit the Menu files. This is the Menu buttons and the Menu backgound. The menu background file is the "background.png" in the gui folder. The menu buttons are found in "gui.png" in the gui folder. The hotbar is also found in "gui.png"
  • Next you can edit the mobs. They are quite advanced to edit but you can still edit them too. There are a lot of mobs and editing all of them will take hours including the Ender Dragon. All these are found in the mob folder
  • Now you edit the pack.txt. This is the description of the texture pack when you open the Texture Pack in Minecraft. Note that only a limited amount of characters will fit here so make it short. The texture pack also has a logo. You can change that in pack.png found when you open up the texture pack folder.
  • Now you can do the extras. You do not have to do them but it is always good to. Some things to do now is:
    - Edit in the art folder, which contains what appears when you place a painting.
    - Edit the Font of minecraft (Note I do not recommend this on a 16x16 texture pack because the default font is pretty much the only font you can do)
    - Edit the armour, this is what the armour looks like in game, not the icons
    - Change what the sun and moon look like. This is found in the terrain folder
  • There is much more you can do with texture packs, this is just the beginning!

Tips

  • You can use the painterly pack for inspiration, but do not copy. PMC will delete your post as they do not accept Painterly packs.
  • A good touch that everybody likes: Use shading!
  • Add detail in your textures
  • Keep in mind that you are not allowed to post x-ray texture packs to PMC
