Minecraft 1.8 brings in a lot of changes, Jeb_ and his team are really working hard to make this a massive update. Back before Jeb_ took over minecraft this was the norm to have long waits between new updates, and this often brought a lot of new features or general bug fixes. When Jeb_ came in it became the norm to have short waiting periods between updates.

I neither love nor hate the long/short waits between new versions, for me it depended on the changes for the new update and how into minecraft I was. There have been many notable updates in my opinion which have become main points within minecraft ‘history’ if you wish to call it. 1.2.5 brought in a brand new enchanting, 1.6 if I recall correctly introduced horses, 1.7 brought in new biomes and new blocks.

Mojang somehow seem to keep having great ideas for new versions, I commend them for the new update features which I’m going to list some of my favorites new changes/updates to the 1.8 version of minecraft.

[Blocks]

The new stone types (diorite, granite and andesite) bring in great new opportunities for building, as well as the new doors, fences and fence gates in the colours of the other wood types. This expands the sense of creativity and what minecrafters can do when it comes to building.

Prismarine based blocks comes from the Guardians temples (refer to bosses and mobs for guardians) and adds a new blue stone. The new edition of a purpose for sponge also excites me as this was underutilized in minecraft after an ‘x’ update that removed the feature of sponge sucking up water.

[Bosses & Mobs]

Endermite- I don’t know much about this little mob but I welcome the addition of new mobs to minecraft, coming from someone whose played with mo’ creatures I enjoyed hearing and seeing the variety of mobs that were in the world.

Rabbit- These animals with the recent addition of sounds as of 14w31a makes rabbits a must for minecraft animal lovers, you can take these little creatures with carrots, and you can breed them with carrots or dandelions. These adorable creatures drop rabbit fur and mutton when killed, they also have the chance to drop rabbit’s foot which can be used to craft a leaping potion in the brewing stand.

Guardian- These creatures are hostile underwater mobs that spawn in the guardian temples scattered in the world, they are a one eyed fish spliced with a water mine minus the chains. These guys are the grunts to the Boss Guardian in the temple, however they drop prismarine shards that can be used to craft prismarine related blocks including sea lamps.

Boss Guardian- This boss is quite unique in my own understanding of it, it’s a different boss that looks like a one eyed fish spliced with a sea mine minus the chains. This boss drops the sponge and spawns once in a Guardian temple. You can access these with having good gear and more. Having potions such as water breathing would make battling this boss an interesting fight.

Sheep- good news, sheep now drop mutton/lamb which was a dearly needed update in my own humble opinion, this means that sheep are once again valuable for more than just their wool and farming sheep looks like a veritable source of food. While some may argue that it’s making minecraft easier, you can easily make the game harder for yourself.

Wolves- wolves now scare skeletons making them run away from wolves much like the behaviour of creepers with ocelots, this is a different change which makes dogs more valuable and desirable

[Optimisations]

Mojang recently released a snapshot that optimized minecraft to work on all sorts of computers, with this it means that elements such as chunk loading are more stable and less intense on the fps, while playing on the 14w31a snapshot I hit 300fps which in my eyes shows how much optimizing can really help improve the fps.

[Villagers]

Villager trading has been majorly tweaked with the addition of subtypes of villagers as well as different new ways to get them to breed. Docm77 has released a tutorial type of thing where with the ability for farmer villagers to farm crops can allow them to breed, the ultimate villager breeder can be created and technically setup. I like the new options for trades and welcome the change to villagers, they have more of a use within minecraft.

This concludes my blog review/overview of the 1.8 update of the things that I am looking forward to. Feel free to comment about what you like about the update coming. Diamond if you enjoyed reading this blog.
