Imagine, your walking through a redwood forest in Minecraft. You can hear the wind rustling the leaves as you hike by. The birds are chirping melodic tunes and the sun is glistening through the trees. You can also hear the steady pattering of a woodpecker nearby. You decide to go investigate. As you go, another sight catches your eye. You just manage to see the peak of a mountain through the trees. You decide you want to get to the top. So you start your journey up the mountain. You slowly approach the edge of the tree line. The sense of verticality is amazing as you can now see for chunks and chunks ahead of you. The once ever-present sound of birds chirping, has now been replaced by the sound of cold-mountainous winds blowing through the peaks. You feel detached from the world below. After admiring the view, you decide to hike back down the mountain. As you approach the treeline, you start to hear birds chirp again and start hearing all the sounds of a living, breathing forest.

My Idea is simple: Bring atmosphere to Minecraft.

Minecraft is dull. All you here are the sounds of cows mooing and sheep eating grass. Every once and a while a nice C418 piano song will come on. Then Minecraft gets starts beautiful again as you mine for ores while listening to the beautiful tunes. After about 5 minutes it stops. Your back to your boring old world with no environmental sounds, no atmosphere at all. It can feel rather lonely and depressing at times.

Minecraft is in desperate need of an atmosphere in my opinion.

Just imagine sitting alone in your cabin you built in Minecraft at night hearing these noises:

Before you make any judgements about his saying, THIS ISN"T HOW MINECRAFT IS SUPPOSED TO BE, I would encourage you to just go into a world, wait till nighttime in a plains biome, and sit and listen with this playing in the background. It is simply amazing how these sounds simply entice your imagination.

Yes I get that there are no birds in minecraft, or bugs, or wind (hopefully some of this will be added). But you can forget that. The ambience is found in the sound alone.

How will this work?

Mojang has already thought of the idea of adding background ambience to Minecraft a long time ago, but it was abandoned and forgotten long ago. The idea was that every time you transition into a new biome, the background noise changes into something more fitting of that climate.

For example, if you walk into a tundra biome, you can hear howling winds whipping through the cold arctic snowdrifts. Or if you are in a jungle, you can hear tons of wildlife and insects come to life.

Also, the ambient sound not only would correlate with the biome you are in, but also the time of day. So a night in the forest would sound a lot different and spookier than at daytime.

Finally, the ambient sound would correlate with the weather. If it snows, you would here a windier blizzard-like noise which is lacking from Minecraft as it is in it's current state.

Of course, all these changes would have to be subtle when you transition from biome to biome. You couldn't just go from a rainforest with birds chirping all the time, straight into a barren desert and cut the sound from the rainforest. That would sound awful and ruin the immersion. This is perhaps the biggest challenge of this idea but it is surely possible to do. Maybe biome transitions could be less sharp, and be subtler like in the real world.

This is just a simplified version how atmosphere could be implemented into the game. I do understand I have not accounted for things such as when you go underwater, or go way up high in the sky, but this basically gets the concept across.

Below are a few sounds I have gathered up from all over youtube that could fit different biomes perfectly. For full effect, go into a Minecraft world and go to that biome while listening to these songs in the background. It really gives a great sense of immersion!

Summary
I hope this brought new light to an untouched subject in Minecraft. I really think that with enough community support, Mojang could add these. I would love to hear your thoughts about what you think about this. Just comment down below!

It's funny reading about your idea that is more than 3 years old now, yet there's still nothing like this in Minecraft. Although perhaps this will change at last as there are going to be ambient sounds underwater in the 1.13 update! Amazing, but I hope they will eventually focus on all biomes just as much as on the underwater ones. All biomes need vast improvements (not only sound-wise), imo.

Btw. mentioning cows and sheep, it reminded me that these animals, plus pigs and chicken are not very appropriate and to me, presence of these particular animals ruin the immersion :/ Instead of cows for instance, there could be yaks in cold biomes, buffaloes in plains, and so on, you know, to make the world feel less like an animal farm and more like a natural environment.

Maybe they should add this in Minecraft 2.0. "The update that reinvented Minecraft"

It would make it feel as if you were inside the game, not just playing it.

This is a AMAZING idea! I could imagine running though a bright forrest with nice music and then coming back a few hours later to feel trapped in the same place with a sinister feeling and creepy music.

Mojang should get to work for this ASAP. This is actually a very good idea and would add a natural effect if they add it at some point.

Some one should at least make a mod for this.

There are mods out there. But there outdated and don't really do the concept justice.
