Farming is one of my favorite things to do in minecraft. I find it peaceful and relaxing to just create giant farms. Since farming is one of my favorite things. I decided to start making a guide to farming. Something that will teach you all you need to know about farming. And maybe some randomness that doesn't matter will get thrown in too. I know that most people know about farming (it's pretty simple) but this gives me something to do. I like putting guides together and hopefully they help someone.  Please let me know what you think by leaving a comment. If you have suggestions for a guide I should make, message me.  Don't forget to leave a diamond if you want to help support me and this guide. Subscribe to stay up to date with everything I'm doing. Basic things to know.
Farming in Minecraft
Farming is an important part of the game if you want to avoid starving to death! Most farming can be done either outdoors, or indoors/underground as long as you provide enough light. If you spend a lot of time underground, it's worth considering doing your farming near your base of operations.

FarmLand
Many types of plants require farmland to grow on. Farmland is simply made by using (right clicking) dirt or grass blocks with a hoe. Farmland looks similar to dirt but that, block isn't as tall.
undefined
Farmland that remains unplanted for too long, or that is jumped on (by players or mobs) will revert to dirt.

Irrigation
Farmland within 4 blocks of a source block of water will become irrigated .(hydrated) Most crops grow better on irrigated farmland than on dry. One block of water will irrigate 80 blocks of farmland:

Lighting
Most crops need light to grow. If you plant them outdoors, they will grow during the day, but if you add additional light they will grow at night too. Indoors or underground, crops will only grow if you provide artificial light for them.

Bone Meal
Many crops can be fertilised with Bone Meal to make them grow faster. Bone Meal is made from skeleton bones, and when you right click to apply it to your crop there is a chance of it growing.

Farming Various Crops/Plants/Trees
Farming Wheat
Wheat can be a good source of food. You'll also need wheat before you can farm cows, sheep, and it helps with chickens. It also can be used to craft a couple things.

undefined

Seeds:

First you will need seeds. you can get these by breaking blocks of long grass. You will also get more seeds when you harvest your wheat, so you only need a few to start with.

Planting your first crop:

First you will need to make a hoe.

undefined

Then prepare some ground next to some water. Water is not needed but wheat will grow faster with it. Plant your seeds and wait for them to grow. Place a torch next to your crops so that they keep growing at night and are ready sooner. Your first wheat farm might look a bit like this:

undefined

If you can find some bones, make Bone Meal and fertilise your crops. Two bone meal will usually grow your wheat fully. If not, you'll have to wait.

undefined
When you harvest your wheat, you will get the wheat item (for cooking/crafting or feeding to sheep and cows) plus more seeds than you started with. You will be able to plant a bigger farm next time!

Farming Melons and Pumpkins
Melons are a useful food source, and are used in brewing potions. Pumpkins are not edible, but can be worn as a helmet for protection against Endermen. Pumpkins are also used for crafting Jack'o'Lanterns, a decorative lighting fixture, and snow golems and iron golems.

Seeds:

Melon and pumpkin seeds can both be found in chests in dungeons and abandoned mine shafts. Pumpkins can also sometimes be found growing wild and melon seeds might be available from NPC villagers.

Melon seeds and pumpkin seeds can be crafted from melon slices and pumpkins.

Planting:

Seeds must be planted on farmland, preferably irrigated. They will then grow into a pumpkin or melon plant, taking 30 minutes to do so. When the plant is mature pumpkin or melon will appear on a farmland, dirt or grass block next to the plant.
  • speed up the growth of the plants by applying bonemeal.
  • while the seed must be planted on farmland, the fruit will appear on dirt, farmland or grass.
  • after harvesting, the plant ill produce another fruit, every 30 minutes.
  • the plant can only have one fruit at a time.
  • an axe is the best tool for harvesting pumpkins, anything will do for melons.

Carrots and Potatoes

Carrots and potatoes are sometimes dropped by zombies. They can also be found in NPC villages.

Growing them is a lot like growing wheat, except there are no seeds. Plant carrots or potatoes in farmland and wait. Bonemeal will speed up the process. When you harvest your crops, you will get back more than you originally planted.

Potatoes and carrots can both be eaten raw, however it is better to bake potatoes in a furnace first.

undefined

undefined

Sugar Cane
Sugar cane is the raw material for sugar and paper. Sugar is used in cooking. paper is used to make maps and books (which you need for Enchanting).

undefined

Sugar cane can be found growing next to water. It grows up to three blocks high. If you break off the middle and top. leaving the bottom block in place, it will continue to grow. This makes sugar cane easy to farm as you don't need to replant if you harvest it carefully.

undefined

Simple Sugar Cane Farm:
Sugar Cane must be planted on dirt or sand blocks that are next to water. It's best to use canals of running water so that cane when harvested will flow to the end of the stream for easy collection.

undefined

Coco Beans
Cocoa beans can be found in dungeon chests, or growing on trees in the jungle. You can farm them by planting the beans on the side of a Jungle Wood log (either use a live tree or take a piece of wood from the tree and put it wherever you like. Just like other plants, they will grow through several stages, and once they are ripe, you can harvest them.

undefined

Nether Wart

Nether Wart can only be found in Nether Fortresses or on soul sand throughout the nether. Once you have some, you can grow it anywhere. Plant it in Soul Sand, wait for it to grow, and harvest it when fully grown.

It doesn't need light, but it isn't speeded up by bone meal and you can only grow it in soul sand, not regular dirt.

Mushrooms (coming soon)
Mushrooms aren't really plants, and nor can they be farmed easily. I will add a guide to them though.
Trees (coming soon)
Farming Animals (coming soon)

Read Spoiler Below!
This guide will continue to be updated and added to. As of right now it is not my main project. Since I'm sure most of you already know most of what you need to know about farming. My main purpose for making this guide (besides to inform people) was I just needed something to do and this gave me something to do. If you read the intro at the top of the guide you would have known this. ANYWAYS sorry for kinda rambling. So since this is not my main project. I will not be updating it as often. Unless people show an intrest and really want me to work on this. As of now my attention is focused on other projects like my new weekly redstone series I'm going to do --> Weekly Redstone
