I remember, approximately a year ago, when I first installed and attempted to play Tekkit with my server friends. Throughout the adventure of using this new launcher, I had enjoyed some aspects of it, and other were unattractive. Though, i found one aspect of it that had really caught my eye, the Industrial Craft 2 Agriculture. Now, being a biologist at heart, I found it intriguing to have to ability to mix and crossbreed different plants to produce the best producing and most efficient plants. Not only that, but I was able to germinate plants that didn't even exist before. Now, before someone assumes that I want IC2's agriculture, then let me elaborate.

One think that set me off about IC2's agriculture was just how amazingly complex and time consuming it was to produce these crop. Getting the material alone was pain enough, but then having to monitor for weeds and hydration, or if you had it automated, checking the levels of weed killer and hydration cells, made farming more work than it was worth. What i would like to see is the implementation of genetics, at least minimally, so that minecraft farmers and biology enthusiast can enjoy just one more aspect to the minecraft world.

So then how can this be implemented?

Well, the few things I did like about IC2's system was how the seed systems were set up. When harvested, a plant would drop normal seeds, or on a semi-rare ocassion, a special type of seed that had improvements or different abilities than did the stock seed. The special seeds would drop if the player had planted different crops next to eachother with crossed stands (Technically, the items were called 'crops'), allowing the plants to exchange different traits with one another. Personally, I'd favor to see a similar design in standard minecraft. The way I see it, plants that grow close to each other would exchange different traits to allow for modification of crop yields and to add another exciting feature to minecraft gameplay.

What about livestock? The way I see it, if you can cross breed plants, what is preventing the player from cross breeding cow, pig, sheep, chicken, dog, cat, etc? For instance, if you were to breed horses, you could select traits of certain horses or mules to fit you needs. Say, for example, you want a faster and more damage resistant horse. No problem! What if you need a mule that can carry more gear than the normal mule does? Not a sweat! The livestock can be design to the players needs.

All in all, a 'Genetic' inheritance of traits would greatly benefit those players who use it to there needs, and would little affect those who do not. Who knows? Comment your thoughts, and diamond this blog if you like the idea!
