Minecraft Misconceptions
I decided to write this blog after spending a higher amount of time on larger servers. The goal of this blog is to hopefully open some eyes to things we see everyday within the Minecraft Community.
Differences between a Newbie and a Noob
Two similar words. Two different meanings. (All definitions were obtained from Urban Dictionary)
Newbie - Not to be confused by noob, a newbie is a newcomer to anything. Newbies can spell, but they lack in what's new to them. Noobs and newbies are kinda opposites, in a way. Plus, newbies are usually more respectful than noobs.
So here we have the definition of Newbie. I'm sure we've all seen them. Their new, ask questions, usually have a less-common skin if they're into the game a bit already. Yet, people are still rude to them, but this is an informational blog, not an opinionated one, so that rant will be for some other time. They come onto this world, with tons of people with fantastic builds, and they try to build themselves as well. Now, you're wondering, "Where are the new people who are jerks?" Well...
Noob - A "noob" is a person who is new or inexperienced in a subject, usually an online game. Noobs are usually annoying and excessively stupid. Do not confuse noobs with newbies, who are inexperienced players that tend to be more mature and strive to become better.
Well this is it. What most people tend to say to any new player. Noob. You see them everywhere, usually identifiable with common teen/Youtuber skins, and in some cases, Youtuber usernames. They are new to the game, yet they prefer less effective methods to get what they want. Common traits shared between the common noob are:
- Horrible Grammar "u suck" "omg can i haz pl0x" "u wot m8"
- Bad Reactions "OWNER PLZZZ OP ME" "kill urself" "1v1 me irl"
- Teen/Youtuber Skins/Names "antvenom1350" "xXSkyLovesBudderXx" "ASF_zombiiSlayer"
- Downright disrespectful.
Hopefully after reading that, one has a better understanding between the two differences.
Server Donating
The second, and the last for now, I want to discuss is donations to a server. This topic is a sensitive one, as many people sometimes don't know what's really going on behind the curtains of a server.
First, let's talk about the real reason to donate. I'm going to talk about Hypixel's Server in this case, because not too long ago the server *technically* broke the record of the largest amount of players on a server at one time. I say technically because the players are on numerous servers, but all connected to one network.
Okay, going off topic. Hypixel's Server, why do they need donations? Well, if you have ever owned a server using any paid host, you'd probably understand, if you didn't, well I'll explain.
Hypixel's Server is hosted by MCProHosting, a leading Minecraft Hosting Service. Hypixel has literally hundreds of servers connected to the network, literally hundreds. That racks up some cash to pay to MCProHosting. But why does Hypixel need to pay them? Well, his hundreds of servers are kept on their computers, which are powerful ones. In order for that to happen, those monsters need to be on 24/7, and only one of them could hold probably 3-6 small servers, such as one of Hypixel's games. Now if one machine handles 3-6, and there is literally hundreds of servers...that's a lot of machines turned on 24/7 making sure these servers stay up. Now where are these computers? In a warehouse, and what do these computers need? Electricity. So to sum it up, in order for Hypixel's server to be up and running, he needs a lot of powerful computers in a warehouse running them 24/7, all ran by his host, MCProHosting. I can't even imagine how big the electricity bill must be, which is why MCProHosting and other paid hosts charge. They need the money to pay that bill, buy the equipment for running servers, and of course, get only a tiny bit of that profit.
Now back to the main point. This is why any server needs donations. In order to keep the server up, so the host can keep their customers happy. And for perks? Servers give them to you as a thank you, because you literally did keep the server up.
With that said, let's look at the bad side: Pay2Win
I have never joined a Pay2Win server myself, but I have seen many people share their experiences. Pay2Win is not their official name, I just prefer to call them that. They are servers, usually Hardcore PvP types, that charge large amounts of money to give you major perks. I'm talking pay $75 for /fly. Yup. I know some of you know what I'm talking about. I don't know much about these servers, nor do I intend to join one, but what I do know is that the owner is making a much bigger profit, while at the same time giving anyone with tons of cash to spare pretty much an Operator rank. My advice: Stay away from these servers.
And finally about server donating. I haven't seen this particular case yet, but I just felt I needed to put this here. If you know for sure that a server is hosted at home, meaning the owner uses his/her own computer...don't donate. Unless the owner is saying they need money to get a host for the server or is a friend of yours and actually NEEDS it, then don't give them money.
Alright that's it for this blog. I might add more to it if I see any more common misunderstandings within the Minecraft community. If you enjoyed this, then maybe you can leave a Diamond, maybe even Sub. And comment what you think, I love constructive criticism. Thanks for reading!
