Minecraft Servers: What went wrong?

We all know minecraft is a great game; that is why we play it. But we also know that servers have lacked quality and originality recently... It leaves us to wonder, why? Where has the great minecraft community gone? Can we fix this?

I believe that I can answer these questions; they are major issues we face today and now with our game.

The first problem we encounter is simple: Money.
Now, by money I do not mean player donation to server, that has existed in computer games forever. At least ones that have player hosted servers. The problem is server to the Big Bad Wolf: Hosting Companies. There are always huge fights about "Which company is the best." But in reality, they are the end of all minecraft servers. Servers needing to pay to simply exist is such a huge problem, unless you are a very skilled minecraft such like Block_Fortress, or Hypixel, or any of those near-deity characters of minecraft, you will not be able to start a server on your own. There are many people I know of who could create excellent, original servers if hosting a server was available. It cuts out much of the skill available in the minecraft community.

The second problem would be these massive servers with literally thousands of slots.
These servers, like Hungergames, and Hub Servers, etc, all make it harder for a small and original server to get noticed. Every player wants to play these servers, and they are everywhere. Hunger Games servers are literally like the most popular server ever, and everyone attempts to make one. But it will not do. Everyone forgets about the original idea, the actual good server, and so we start to get a monopoly of Servers.

The third problem would be the players: Where do they go?
Players have always been attracted to fun servers and good communities, but now they all go to Hunger Games or other such large servers. As I said before, servers are starting to monopolize. Not as many new minecrafters are seen today as there were a few years ago (Yes I played then) when minecraft was still in Alpha. Everyone was new then and exploring. There was an equal distribution of players among servers. But now, I could have 10 servers in my serverlist with over 1000 players each. These players just stay on these servers, never exploring, killing noobs, etc.

This is why Minecraft Servers are doomed. No one can escape this monopoly. Everyone has to play the server with the most players, with all the big youtubers and such. No one cares about staying on a small server with friends anymore. I do not believe that this is fixable. I hope someone, some day, can figure out how to redistribute players, and hopefully Mojang makes Server hosting easier.

On a completely different note:
Also, be sure to check out my friend Chetcat. Amazing Blogger, and one of my Admins on my future server! Great guy!

I have owned many community servers like explained and I totally see your point as everyone leaves and attempts to destroy it (but fail of course). mojang is soon implementing realms which is still a host-like feature but in my opinion far more stable.

This is true. Minecraft is slowly spiraling into a game primarily inhabited by 10 year old's on hunger games, and mini-games servers. Now don't get me wrong I enjoy these servers too, every once in awhile. There a good refresher but I play primarily for what the game was intended to be. Most survival servers that require work and dedication business is slowing. Its mostly the same old loyal people that come back. That's because when you play survival you can't buy a class where you start out with 100 diamonds free like in these massive pvp servers. It requires work and time. And young children are not very patent and persistent. You cant use your parents credit card to be successful in traditional survival servers.

That comment literally puts the description of all the new, young players in crystal definition. Can I add this to my blog? Thank you for this great comment.

AH, I would love to help. But I am not that good of a Java programmer or builder.

I hope Chetcat and you make one of those very friendly-community servers!
