Hello all, I am UsedGum. This is my first blog, and well, submission. It is a tutorial on downloading mods on a Mac and/or PC. Enjoy, and please diamond if you do. :)
The Mac:
MagicLauncher can be used as well, so no unzipping is necessary. If you know how to use MagicLauncher, do so. If not, you may want to follow this...
I RECOMMEND THAT YOU BACK UP ALL YOUR FILES!
-BEGINNING-
1. Find the mod (.zip file) you want, and download it.
2. Download ModLoader, AudioMod, or just anything else in fact, if any of them are necessary for the download. It will most likely say whether you do or not somewhere in the post.
3. Either create a folder for storing mods in your main Minecraft folder, or store all your contents on your desktop. I would put them in a folder, as it keeps your desktop neat and tidy, but the decision is yours.
4. You will need this app, or an app like it! Visit the Mac App Store, and search for an app called "Unarchiver" or "The Unarchiver". Any unarchiver would work, but this one seems to be used very often, is obviously effective.
-ABOUT HALFWAY THERE-
1. Search for your Minecraft folder. It isn't very hard to find - Open Finder. Click 'go', which is located on the bar at the top of your screen. Now click 'go to folder' and type '~/Library/Application Support/minecraft'. Pressing command, shift and G simultaneously will also open up this 'go to folder' feature.
2. Go to the folder called 'bin', found inside the Minecraft folder
(folder-ception!)
3. Inside your bin folder, you will find something called 'minecraft.jar'. Add .zip to the end.
4. Right click it, or press control and left click simultaneously, so a small selection of controls will pop up. Click the 'open with' command, and open it with your unarchiver.
-ALMOST FINISHED-
1. Unzip the item now called 'minecraft.jar.zip'.
2. All files ending with .CLASS need to be dragged into the minecraft.jar FOLDER. (Yes, folder. A folder is created in this process.)
3. Remove the META-INF folder.
YOU ARE DONE!

The PC:
-BEGINNING TO END-
1. This is very similar to the way mods are downloaded on a Mac. Once again, find a mod you believe you will enjoy, and download it, making sure it will work with your version of Minecraft.
2. Open your minecraft.jar file. This can be done by opening 'Computer' and doing so : C:Users(computer name goes here)AppDataRoaming.minecraftbin. If you search '%appdata% in your start menu, it will also be found, but only if you continue following the path stated above from 'AppData'.
3. Download WinRAR if you do not already have it, and open your minecraft.jar in it. This can be done by just dragging it into the application.
4. Open the .zip, .rar, or whatever dot it is, folder of your downloaded mod and remove the contents, dropping them into the minecraft.jar. Sometimes, but rarely, some contents must be placed in different places, not just the main minecraft.jar directory. Check the website where you downloaded the mod from, or the website where the mod originated from, of you are unsure where the appropriate files should be located.
5. Delete META-INF and close minecraft.jar!
