The screenshot above is a death cam I got in TF2, and I had to save it. I edited it with photoshop, and "Aura" by Approaching Nirvana started to come through my speakers. It made me think, as Approaching Nirvana does. I saw the fallen engie on the ground, and the medic with his healing beam fading out and away from him, as there was nothing more to heal. And I thought(and wrestled with the lighting effects, but that is a different story).
When I seriously think for a while, I end up considering intangible things and abstract ideas. I thought about the death of the engie, and the activities occurring around him, the demoman fighting in front of him, protecting the medic and the fallen comrade. The term "he is in a better place" is what would be said, or something related to that. As I thought about this term, I started to think about how people say "What do you think happens after we die?". I had always had some smart-ass answer for this, just to see how people would react. I would avoid the question. But it came to me(Cliche, Isn't it).
It is selfish to think anything happens posthumous. As humans, it is uncomfortable and disturbing to think that we, as a person, thinking and all, exist in the world. But it boils down to what we refer to as "self" is just a pile of conveniently arranged atoms(correct me if I'm wrong). Sure, it seems there is something special in this pile, but really, it boils down to being a pile. A selfish pile, thinking this collection of atoms is more special than the pile of atoms in a rock. Once we die, these atoms re-arrange themselves.
It is a terrible concept to imagine. The thought of not being able to "exist" is an impossible thought to think. All we know is existence. So we take the selfish route of thinking "something has to keep us existing once we die". It is an idea I had never considered before, and I was aching to get my thoughts down.
Let me know what you think. I know, it is long, and difficult to wrap your head around. You can tell I had some trouble given the strange arrangement of the words in my post. Leave some comments telling me your opinions. I want to hear them.
