Tomandgreen: A True Tale

For awhile now, I've wanted to tell the tale of how I got into Minecraft, and what I've done since then. I've been part of some amazing events, and the number of individual stories I could share would far exceed the amount of blogs I feel comfortable with writing about myself. Rather than do that, I've decided to jot down my Minecraft story: a biography of sorts. Before I begin I'd like to say that this is going to be HUGE, and that if you feel likeskimming parts I don't blame you. Also, every word of this is the truth, I'm not making this up! I'll even back up a lot of what I say with links to relevant threads, so everyone can see how the events unfolded. Enough with the intro, let's get going!

Part One:Pirates on the Forum

The first time I heard about Minecraft was in September 2010, through a friend andneighborof mine. He gave it nothing but splendid reviews, and when I went over to his house he showed it off to me. He let me derp around within his world for a bit, and I liked it quite a lot. From then on every time I visited him, which was very frequently, we would add to his base.

Ididn'tthink about buying Minecraft until a month after we began this tradition, and right before I bought it I signed up on the Minecraft Forums, as I was suggested to do by my friend. The next day, when I got to checking the Forums again, I saw I had a PM which read:

"I've create a Minecraft clan called The Pirates of the Infinite Horizons, you should join." - Gilguy360

Gilguy360 was IGN of my neighbor. I clicked the link he had provided, and signed up right away. To my surprise, the thread was already on it's second page, I was late to the party! Interesting side note, this was the same day Minecraft reached Beta. There I was in a Minecraft clan with a bunch of people I didn't know, under the common goals of pillaging and plundering. How could I have guessed where it would lead me?

I'm going to take some time and detail how clans worked back then, more than three years ago, because some people may be a bit confused at this point. Clans were groups of members on the Minecraft Forums, united through certain rules, servers, ranks, etc. There were only a few clans back then, the most prominent being The Circle of Magi, The Royal Minecraft Militia, The Kingdom of Alesgan, and The Civil People of Survival. These clans have a very rich history, and my story is ingrained in the stories of these clans just as much as these clans are such a crucial part of my story, as you will see later on down the road. PotIH (an acronym for the Pirates of the Infinite Horizons) in some respects became a legendary clan in itself, though it was not an easy task.

So, there we were, this clan of pirate miners, looking for a server that'd fit our needs. In the mean time, we had a bit of a vote to see who should be promoted to captain, so that Gilguy, who's proper title was Pirate King Gilguy, would have some assistance with ruling over the group.

Now is a good time to go over how ranks worked within PotIH: There was a pirate king who got a good three votes on matters, an admiral who assisted the king and got two votes, and captains who ruled over "crews" of members, and got one vote each.

A player named Hueyhey was given the role of admiral shortly before the captain search started, probably because Gilguy knew him from elsewhere, and so it was a vote between me and a guy named jhshadon. I ready to win the title of captain and lead a crew of my own! You'll see how that worked out...

The winner was... a tie. Our votes were 4 and 4, all tied up. For some reason, rather than make an executivedecision, Gilguy made jhshadon and me duel captains... which irked me somewhat. Now I had to share my vote and my crew with some other bloke! I got over my annoyance quickly, and began to think up names for my new crew. Finally, I got a great idea: The Black Crows. Mypartner was fine with it, and so it became the first official crew of the Pirates of theInfiniteHorizons. And... We still didn't have a server.

We kept not having a server for the next week. All the while we were accumulating a grand member-base, the most notable recruits being UltraJake and Paradox. It's not that we wern't looking for a server, we just were waiting for one to come up, one that never actually ended up being created... which is why I started looking for alternates. Finally we recruited Bellicosei, a guy who finally hosted a server for us. It waslaggy, and only sometimesavailable, but it did the job...

We had some mild fun building ships and constructing cities, but the server's quality was really ahindrance, and so we switched over to a server hosted by Paradox. Only thing is... his server wasn't much better. All in all, the politics of the clan were thriving (new members, crew assignments, ranking up, etc.) but ourexistencecontained no raiding and no actual playing of Minecraft. That all changed when we teamed up with The Kingdom of Alesgan. They were much larger than us at the time, but we created an alliance that let us start using their server for our deeds.

That was thebeginningof the end for us. We had a great server, and lots of players to play with, but our very foundation was crumbling... we stillweren'traiding like we were supposed to be. We couldn't raid our own ally! And then Paradox, who by now was my first mate in the Black Crows, had to quit do to the server making him lag like crazy. Finally, to make everything a lot worse, a team of griefers attacked the server, and one ofthem was a fellow pirate! Greenstuf, the brother of Admiral Hueynhey no less! Though he was banned, he left with a good point: GilGuy360, our Pirate King, had been taking recent eventswayto seriously. He'd banned Paradox for taking a break, he freaked out at all who tried to get a new server rather than the KoA one which was really not that good, and worst of all he wouldn't listen to anyone, ever. This planted a seed in my mind...

Tons of people were leaving, and Gilguy was getting more and more drunk with power... I had to do the only thing that made sense, I started a mutiny. The whole of the active clan backed me up, but rather thanconcede, Gilguy just ignored our cries. We finally just went on with it anyways, and I was declared Pirate King of PotIH... but not so fast!

Gilguy called up the King of Alesgan, V.I.R.O.S, to manage a hearing between me and himself. It would determine the fate of our clan. After much discussion, I was given reign of PotIH for 7 days, a test run if you will. I was satisfied with the verdict... but for some reason, things didn't go that way in the slightest. Gilguy managed to use mob psychology to get everyone to think I was a traitor, and UltimateBrownie, a member of PotIH who hadn't been too important before these events arose, was given complete control. This is what lead our second thread.

After the absolute mess our clan fell into, we actually had a rather nice recovery! Most of the active members joined up with us, even Gilguy himself, and we applied to The Art of War server, a server promising the best clan vs. clan fighting in all of Minecraftia! It wasaroundthis time we decided to create a pirate council for voting on matter, and we started to meet everyFridayon a custom IRC chat channel. The only complaints I had about how the clan was running was that our pirate ways were being diluted by more military ranks and "jobs".

Somehow, Gilguy's hold on people took a turn for the worst, and he angered the people of PotIH once again. This is what led to him being banished from his own clan, a choice that I both agreed with, and detested. Sure, he was cocky and a horrid ruler, but he was still my friend and neighbor in case you've forgotten! Anyways, life went on.

Gilguy didn't take his ban too lightly, but war never broke out, so all was well in the long run. Paradox was promoted to Admiral in place of the now inactive Hueynhey, and we continued for awhile, still on The Art of War. The bad part about large servers is that your base gets pwned almost the secondafter you make it, so restarting became sort of a norm. After a bit of this make a base, lose a base, nonsense I was ready to quit, but what set me over the roof was when UltimateBrownie decided to turn the clan into a "group of friends" andannihilatethe raiding days of old. I had had enough, and quit then and there.

What had started as Pirates of the Infinite Horizons morphed into the ratherunsuccessfulBrotherhood of the Infinite Horizons, and I was without a clan for the first time. What to do with myself? I thought and thought, then thought some more. It was time for a new clan: It was time for The Academy of Minecraftia!

Part 3:Academic Excellence

Okay, this is where things get interesting. I decided to create this new clan with my friend Gilguy360. We put aside our pirate squabbles for the noble attempt at a Minecraft school, and boy did it work. We had people signing up for tons of subjects, and teachers were applying as well! It we even got a server early on from one of the new recruits. Things were going well, amazingly well! Not only was a running my own clan, but that clan was popular!

I taught Clan Politics and PvP at this school, because I believed after the whole Pirates fiasco I would be qualified at both. All the teachers started building up their classrooms, but our server host, whom we shall refer to as Ano, was getting annoyed. Back then, there was no creative mode, you had to use these special item IDs to spawn things in. Since all the teacher wanted to spawn things in, they were all asking Ano for the IDs, and this wasn't too good.

Our classrooms were done, and our students started flooding in, but we soonrealizedthat teaching a class of minecrafters would be a huge hassle. Some of them wouldn't stay put, others talked in class. We didn't really have the means to stop them, since only Ano was op'd. It was annoying, but we managed.

Our popularity continued, and we grew in numbers at a staggering rate. Even Hueynhey, who followed from the old Pirate days, was having trouble keeping up with the application accepting, a job me and Gil had assigned to him. I'm still amazed at the player-base we accumulated, it was really quite enormous.

The server was always up, and we almost always had a teacher on, but greifers... griefers everywhere. Classrooms that took days were crumbled, cities that were cherished became blackened. Me and Gilguy even became inactive due to school. This lead to my dramatic exit, which also was my 1000th post. Here it goes:

Hm, 1000 posts? That's so good I may go active! Jkjkjk, we all know I'm too wishy washy to stick with one clan for long....
P.o.t.I.H was great, till leadership changed.
A.o.M is amazing, yet, something feels wrong.... All the posts here are app based.... The op is failed, gill and me are really inactive, the rules are limiting and responsibility is low, I don't even have a working computer anymore.... I could change all this, but listen to my analogy:

I really craved a burrito (clan), so I made a huge one, and began to eat. I soon was full of burrito, but there was more, and more, and more, till I got up and ran as far away as possible. I came back when burrito sounded good again, to find my old burrito moldy, and my stomach wanting nachos (a different clan) instead. Do I take what's left of the burrito and chew it bitterly, rejoicing that I saved money (my dignity), or do I say, what the heck, I'm throwing this away and getting some nachos. I... Chose.... Nachos. Soyanara amigos! I hope you remember my awesome analogy and not my crude exit from my own clan.... You can find me at Pirates of the Infinite Horizons, I have a feeling the leadership... Is better now. Finally, I'm my wake, I elect originator to fill my post. Best wishes from that filthy scumbag with an ever churning mind, Tomandgreen!
