Hey you! Are you an amazing voxelsniper? Are you a worldedit master? Neither am I!
So I'm going to show you how to grow large trees without having to mess with mods and tools!
xwx977's Tutorial for Large trees!
(I know, not an amazing title)
While working on my little village, Ravensbridge, I realized i'll need some big trees to provide a canopy over the road. At first, I used the hit-and-miss tactic, growing trees and then destroying them. This proved tiring and almost fruitless, so I tried other methods. Surprisingly, when I tried to place blocks around the sapling and THEN growing them, I almost exclusively began to grow large trees!
In order to test said hypothesis, I went to the wiki and checked for info on large trees.
Info: "Large oak trees are more uncommon, and have a distinct look and different growth requirements. They often have "branches", outgrowths of wood on the sides of the trunk, or even freestanding and surrounded by leaves. They require 4-14 blocks of open space directly above the sapling to grow (Air or Leaves only) but can otherwise be completely enclosed on all sides"
So I went ahead to test how useful was my idea. and created a testing area on a flatworld (see iamge).
In the "testing area", i've created 4 lanes, each with 20 spots for trees. The first lane had no blocks surrounding the sapling, the second had 1 block surrounding the sapling, the third had 2 blocks surrounding the sapling, and the last had (you guessed right!) 3 blocks surrounding the sapling. My "hypothesis" is that the first two lanes will have the usual large tree ratio, meaning 1:10.
Lane 1: The lane with no blocks around the sapling grew with only a single bone meal every time. Out of 20 trees, 2 trees grew large and had branches and a wide canopy. Nothing unusual, single bone meal, 1:10 ratio.
Lane 2: The lane with one block surrounding the sapling grew with a single bone meal everytime. Out of 20 trees, 2 trees (again) grew large with branches and canopies. Again, Nothing unusual, single bone meal, 1:10 ratio.
Lane 3: The lane with two blocks surrounding the sapling began to show differing results. Trees usually took a few bone meals to grow, from 1 to 29 averaging at 11 (10.9 actually). 18 out of 20 trees grew large with canopies, an effective method to grow large trees. About 11 bone meals on average, 9:10 ratio.
Lane 4: The lane with three blocks surrounding the sapling had similar results. Trees too from 1 to 41 bone meals to grow, averaing 13 bone meals (13.1 actually). 19 out of the 20 trees grew large with canopies, showing the third lane has a better mealtree ratio. About 13 bone meals on average, 19:20 ratio.
So, I found out my trick to growing large trees is quite effective. On average, 3-4 bones will give you a big tree to decorate your garden. Now for the pros and cons:
Pros:
-Effective method, with about 90% succes chance
-Time efficent to using tools or hit-and-miss tactic
-Easy, only requires basic Minecraft knowledge
-Can be farmed the same way without bone meals
Cons:
-Bone meal wasteful, not really useful on Survival
-Tree's exact shape cannot be determined
-Tools can do this easier, for those with knowledge of them
So how to conclude? That's a pretty good method, I believe, and can help people make an artifical forest or garden easily, without knowledge of tools and mods. While rather wasteful on bone meals, large trees are more likely to be grown on creative worlds, and in case you want them for farming purposes you can always let the grow naturally. So yeah. Thank you for your time I guess
