--What kind of server is it?--
This server would be a cool, economy-style server, with a twist. There would be a normal money system and you would be able to sell stuff easily with a /sell command. You could sell anything and buy almost anything.
--What is the goal?--
You would join the server and see a massive hotel (A good-looking one). You would start with 10 score (explained later). You would enter the hotel where you would be assigned a room which you could walk to or teleport to (with a delay). You would have to pay rent with your in-game currency every real-time month or you would have to declare bankruptcy and get the money that you start with back. Each person would have an individual score that others could see either next to the person's name in the chat or by doing /score show {username}. Declaring bankruptcy would lower your score by 5. If you hit a score of 0, you would be banned from the server for 1 day and after the ban is lifted, you would start with 5 score.
--What is the point of money other than to pay rent?--
With money, you could either buy a boost to your score for a lot of money, or buy land for you to peacefully build a house on. If you choose to purchase land, you would have to pay more rent. You could buy more and more land, exponentially increasing the amount of rent you need to pay. Be careful, though, because if you fail to have enough money to pay rent at the end of the month, land will automatically be sold (most recently bought - first piece of land bought). Of course, you can also buy materials to build your house with.
--Is there any other way to earn score besides buying it?--
Yes. If at the end of the month you have not had to go bankrupt, you will earn one score for living in the hotel, two for having a plot of land, three for having a larger plot of land, and so on. These scores do NOT stack. Also, about score: You will be able to do /score leaderboard to show what the top 10 scored people are. You can also do /score rank to show your rank.
--What if the world gets so bloated with people that no one will be able to gather resources to gain money?--
Not to worry! First of all, any landowners that are inactive for over two months will automatically lose all their land (if they haven't already). Second, the world will be very large to be able to support lots of people with plots. Third, you won't gather resources in that world! The world where the hotel is and where you own land is a different world from the gathering one. Also, the gathering world is regenerated and reset every month.
--What about donations?--
Ah, of course the server has to stay up! Now, when you donate, you will get a little $ for every 5 dollars you donate, rounded down. If you go over $15 donated, it will change color and go to one dollar sign. If you go over $30 donated, it will change color again go back to one. If you go over $45 donated, it will change color once again and go back to one. If you hit $60 donated + you will get an additional plus sign next to the rest of your dollar signs. What would you donate for? Well, you could donate for in-game money every month. There would be a cap to how much you could buy per month. You could also buy /nick and maybe a "Bankruptcy Bailout" which would save you from bankruptcy one time. This part is pretty flexible.
--Other things--
This idea is relatively customizable in various things like starting money, donations, difficulty, and other things you could add or take away. There was one thing that I thought of that would be kind of cool. You could make investments in a random stock market. There would be 3 - 5 stocks to choose from and act kind of like the actual stock market. There might be a crash every so often or a huge explosion in prices. Just something possible to add.

P.S. I don't think that anybody will actually use this idea because of the sheer amount of custom plugins that would have to be developed, not to mention the buildings, but if you want to put this idea onto your server, ask me for permission first, please. I probably won't help make it come to life, but I would like to watch my idea happen.
tl;dr
You live in a hotel and work to pay off rent. As you pay off rent, you move out and live in awesomer places. Compete with people using your score. Please tell me if you want to use this idea on a server.
