I have always hated getting rid of computers.
It saddens me to see two or three year old PCs getting thrown out in the trash, left in the rain, or the like, even though they work perfectly. Most of my home servers and computers are over four years old and well past obsolete. Then, why do you ask, do we still keep them? Simply because they're still useful. My Bukkit server runs off of a machine that shipped with Windows XP over six years ago. It has ran continuously for over three years without stopping. I do video editing on a pre-Intel Mac (G5). So, why are these machines being condemned to the world's landfills?
Mainly because of two things:
1. Marketing
2. Games
The first is simple. The latest OSes or pieces of software need the fastest computer possible, even if it's overkill. Ads demonstrate the latest and greatest, even if it will only be used for typing Word documents and browsing the Web. And what happens to the machines that are replaced? Death by garbage compactor.
The other is even easier to comprehend. The latest games, like Minecraft, actually do require faster hardware. Sadly, the useful computers left behind are forgotten and destroyed.
Computers actually become obsolete, and I'm not advocating hoarding every old piece of hardware that you have in case it will be useful at some point. However, in a world where resources and money are being wasted on overpowered hardware, you might want to consider keeping your PC a few years or giving (selling) it to someone who could use it for years to come.
