I can rarely go on the internet without seeing someone being bullied, annoyed or harassed. To some people, words hurt. It's an unavoidable problem that will probably happen (or already has) to you.
There is a certain freedom that comes with anonymity that makes some people want to be rude on the internet. Some people post things they wouldn't dare say to your face. But, do you ever consider who they are? What is making them want to behave this way?
Some people do it for the sheer thrill of ruining someone's day. To wipr the smile off their face and get a reaction. These are trolls.
One way you can deal with this type of abuse is by politely asking them to stop. If this doesn't work, and the abuse continues, there will usually be a report button, a block button, or a mute button. If all of these are unavailable then you can browse to another page, close the app, or walk away from the screen. These people don't know you. These people can't hurt you unless you give them the power to.
Although, there is another type of abusive person. These are the type of people who missed a flight, who ran out of gas on the drive home, who have just had a terrible day and are in the perfect mood to look for things that they dislike and abuse the people who posted said things. Although this type of behaviour is uncalled for, it's a little more understandable than the trolls.
What to do if the abuse continues:
Some people may become obsessed with scaring you or trying to slander you. They may stalk you online, try to gather information on you and post it somewhere you don't want it to be. If this happens, contact a site owner, admin, or in some dire cases, the police. It may not come to that but I have known people who have been doxed (had their info ex. phone #, home address posted online by a hacker) that get death threats, threats to their families, etc. Tis is the point when you call the police. DO NOT try to track the hacker's IP. Leave it to the authorities.
Remember, there are people who love you. People behind a screen can only affect you if you let them. Never give in.
