If you did some research before digging out a room underground, you would find that what you are making will probably collapse and anyone and anything in that room would be crushed under the ground above it. "Why?" you ask, completely confused about your gold stash has disappeared from the complex underground maze you have created. I shall tell you.

Support
If you have a massive room and the only supports are the walls then it's going to collapse. Especially if it is a square room.  Think of weight.

So we can see the weight now and if we look at tensions in the thing, we can see how likely it is to collapse.

As you can see, all the weight in the middle can't go anyway as it is a flat roof with no support. The closer we get to the beams, the less likely it is to collapse. I know what you are saying... "But you can add a pillar in the middle!" Yes, you can but it will not sort out the problem completely.

You see, even with an extra support in the middle, there are fairly high chances of it collapsing in. So, what is the best solution? Well if you want to get rid of the chances completely then you have no option but to do the below.

Yes... Don't dig at all. But now you have no space to put anything! That is the problem with supports. The more you put down, the less space you have. So what is the best thing to do? Well it is quite simple.

Something like this is best. Why? Well let's look at tension stuff and weight stuff again, shall we?

Perhaps what I gave you is NOT the best solution but I will fix that in a sec. So.... Why does this work? Well the weight is sent to the pillars thanks to the curvature of the roof. Don't ask me why this happens but I believe it is something to do with gravity pulling down or something. Do you really expect me to do all YOUR research? Bah, lazy kid... The more round the roof, the better. Let me try and make a better example :3

This is the best thing you can possible have. The roof is so circular that any weight applied to it would be redirected to the beams and go into the stronger ground below it. Let us (me) add those arrow weight things.

Now we have sorted the roof out, there is another problem that has wriggled it's way into your creation hoping to refill the gap you have dug out. It is....

Pressure
Well at least that is what I am going to call it. It's probably not pressure but deal with it. So now you've directed all the weight away from the roof into the pillars, the pillars have a lot of pressure on them. This is simple to deal with.

The pillar has to hold all of the weight that is now being put upon it. Not only does it have to hold what was already being pushed down on it but it has to hold down everything that was being put on the roof before being redirected to it.The ground below it will also be getting a lot of pressure but that ground below it can't break as it is reinforced by even more ground. The pillar, however is not being reinforced by anything. The ground below it won't budge so the only space it has to move to is the space beside it. When it does move to this space, it would collapse and when it collapses, so does the whole roof that was putting the weight on the pillar. To sort this out all we do is make the pillars bigger. The bigger the room, the bigger the pillar. I don't think you need a new one of these terrible diagrams I am drawing to show you that.

Other Floors
So you have made a chain of rooms and stuff then you decide that you need some more rooms underneath that. Well something you should do is make sure that the pillars from the top floor are in the same place. Why not? Well one pillar holds an entire rooms-worth of weight (1/2 of a room + 1/2 of a room = 1 room) so putting all that weight onto something with barely any support would make that room collapse and with that room the room(s) above it. Another thing is the pillars should probably be bigger (wider) than the ones above it as it would be carrying even more weight. Sorry but no diagrams for this bit. :)


There you go now make realistic dungeon places and stop saying you have curved roofs to make it look nice.
