Shadow Cliff Cave

It was a warm, sunny day in the town called Shadow Cliff.
It was bursting at the seams with life and joy, with smiles being traded
and happiness spreading. A warm breeze blew as Charles walked the brittle
gravel path to the outskirts of town. The chrunchy gravel beneath his feet turned
to dirt after he had walked a few miles from his hometown. Charles stopped
walking and took a deep breath of the cool, fresh air. 'Finally,' he
'the Exploration!' Today was a special day; once every six months Shadow
Cliff's mayor sent a dozen people to go and gather supplies and useful resoures. The main goal
of the journey was to find a more populated area for the town to settle
down in. Shadow Cliff's current location was in a deserted valley with
little or no valuable resources. This month, Charles was picked by the mayor
himself to embark on the difficult expedition across the valley.

After walking for a few more minutes, Charles saw the others that were
travelling sitting in the shade of a lone oak tree. He waved at them and they
waved back. Charles was thrilled to be here and he dashed to the tree, brimming
with excitement. "Hey guys and gals! Great to be here!" Charles exclaimed, out
of breath. Instead of returning his kind smile and greeting, the group stared at
him with cold eyes. Charles looked down at the soft grass, confused as to why
they weren't happy. A woman stepped forward from the group and tapped Charles on the shoulder.
"I am Brittany, the leader of this group. Charles, right?" Charles looked up and nodded. Brittany
was wearing the same type of clothes as everyone else- black, baggy jeans and a black shirt. She had
bright blonde hair and green eyes with blue flecks. She held out her hand and Charles gripped it firmly
and shook it twice.
"Well, Charles, glad you're here. We're waiting for one more woman to come- oh, here she is now," Charles
spun around and saw a woman dashing across the valley. When she was about 4 blocks away from Charles she
called out, "Sorry for being late! My pigs got loose!" Charles lightly chuckled and greeted her with a handshake.
Brittany clapped her hands together and put on a thin smile. "Now that we're all here, let's get going. Mayor
Ender Cat has only given us a few days to complete the expedition, but I know we can do it. Ender Cat is too amazing to be disappointed. He nearly
had a heart attack last time when the group didn't come back. We simply cannot let

him down, unlike that last group. Oh I wish we had the mayor's intelligence
and courage to guide us now." Everyone silently nodded and followed Brittany as she led the group further

away from their hometown.

Charles was in the back of the line walking with the woman who had arrived late. Her
name was Stephanie and she had dark brown hair with crystal blue eyes.
"I...I love your eyes, Mrs. Stephanie," Charles commented awkwardly as they headed out.
Stephanie threw her head back and laughed.
"So formal! 'Mrs. Stephanie', ha! First, call me 'Steph' or 'Stephanie'. Secondly, I'm
not married, so it'd be 'Miss Stephanie'. Lastly, thank you!" Charles nodded and kicked at a few
pebbles lying on the ground
. Stephan ienudged Charles gently and pointed across the valley to a nearby mountain.
"Do you want to go check it out? I mean, we're supposed to be exploring, so..." Charles
looked at the mountain and back at Stephanie. He smiled and nodded excitedly.
"Wait, should we tell Brittany...?" Charles asked, wondering how Brittany would react if she found out
they went away without her permission.
"We'll just check it out really quick. Besides, we're adults- we can handle ourselves!" Stephanie said,
puffing her chest out. "Race you there!" She called out, sprinting towards the mountain. Charles
smiled widely and chased after her, feeling his strong heartbeat thump-thump-thumping in his chest.
'I like her,' he thought as he finally reached the base of the mountain where Stephanie was resting
and catching her breath.

"Let's walk around its base, see if there is a tiny cave where we can start mining," Charles suggested
once they both regained their stability. Stephanie nodded in agreement and they grabbed their picks and
walked around the base of the mountain. Charles was at least 10 blocks ahead of Stephanie when he screamed
loudly. "Stephanie! AHH---" He was abruptly cut off and Stephanie was terrified. "Charles? Charles!
Where are you?!" Stephanie called out. She tentatively walked forward, gripping her pick so tightly her
knuckles were white. "Charles...? Can you hea- AHH!!"

It was pitch black, and Charles was falling, and falling fast. Breathless, Charles couldn't
summon a scream. Twigs and branches reached out from the walls of the hole, cutting and scratching
his face. He felt his shirt snag on a branch, ripping violently and tearing the whole shirt from
his torso. Charles' free-fall continued until he splashed hard into a pool of water. He was
confused for a moment, wondering where he was. He finally realized that we was under water without
any air in his lungs, and his head shot out of the icy water. He breathed heavily and sucked in
all of the air. Charles waded in the water for a few seconds until he heard a distant scream.
'Probably just my screams echoing off of the walls...' he thought. 'But I never said, "Move! Move!"....'
Charles suddenly realized that it was Stephanie calling out a warning to Charles. He jumped out of
the water as if it was infested with crocodiles and he heard a loud splash behind him.
"Stephanie...? Are you okay...?" Charles called out in the dark room. No reply. Did Stephanie survive
the fall down the trecherous hole...?

Panicking and unsure what to do, Charles lit a torch (that was in his waterproof pack) and hung
it on the wall of the room. He took a big gulp of air and dove into the pool of icy water, groping
in the dark, murky water for Stephanie. He finally grabbed her limp hand and dragged her ragged,
scratched body out of the water. "Stephanie? Come on, respond! We still have to explore the rest of this... cave,"
Charles held Stephanie's cold hand, thinking hard. He grabbed two nearby stones and felt them. They
were a lot colder than the water, and Charles shook them in his hand, nodding in the dim light. He
lifted Stephanie's shirt just to reveal her scratched stomach. Charles gently pressed the cold stones
to her stomach and jumped when Stephanie's hand suddenly darted to her stomach, grasping the stones and
launching them far away from her. She slowly sat up, her hand coming to her forehead. She glared at
Charles as though he just killed an innocent puppy. "Do. NOT. Do that AGAIN!" she yelled, causing Charles
to burst out in laughter. "I don't know CPR, and I might have hurt you if I tried to perform it..." he
giggled, standing up and reached down to help Stephanie up. She snatched her pick from the ground and
grunted. "Let's just start looking around. Maybe we'll find something good, like diamonds or-" she was
cut off by the sound of a low moaning. Charles knew that there was a zombie nearby. He wrestled two iron
swords from his pack and handed Stephanie one. She got two bows and gave 16 arrows to Charlie and 16 to
herself. "Always pack weapons!" they said in sync. Charles places a few more torches in a tunnel that went
downwards. The torches lit up the bloody faces of seven zombies, and Stephanie squeaked with terror.
Charles stumbled backwards as the zombies approached the two. He readied his bow and aimed, firing and
hearing the satisfying thud of a body dropping to the ground. Stephanie charged at the two zombies closest
to her, decapitating one of them and stabbing the other one in the gut. Blood sprayed over the walls of
the tunnel and all over Stephanie, causing her to gag in disgust. Charles walked in front of Stephanie
and drove his sword into the skull of a zombie, covering Charles in hot, thick blood. Stephanie equipped
her bow and shot two arrows into the chest of a zombie, causing blood to slowly ooze out of the wounds.
Charles quickly finished off the zombie with a decapitation. He screamed out loud with rage as he drove
the blade of his sword through the remaing two zombies. As the corpses slid off of the sword, Charles'
echoes could be heard bouncing off the walls of the tunnel, alerting the mobs lurking deep in the cave of their presence.

"Charles," Stephanie gasped, breathless, "I know we just got down here, but I think we need to
go. It's... creepy down here and I think Brittany is worried about us. She has no idea where we went!"
Charles bit his already-bloody lip and spun around to stare at Stephanie. He had a mad look in his eye,
and with the blood splatters on his chest, he looked like a crazed murderer. "Steph, we're exploring!
We NEED to do this! Now, you can go up, see if I care! This might be full of useful minerals, and I'm
going to find out if it is!" Stephanie sighed and shook her head. "I'm coming, I'm coming. But this was a bad idea..."
Charles stared at her with cold eyes. "It was your idea." Stephanie looked at the ground, not sure what to say. Charles
led the
way down the mysterious tunnel, lighting the path with torches. After a few moments of walking, the tunnel suddenly expanded
into a large cave with many different confusing paths and tunnels leading into darkness.

"Which way do we go..?" Stephanie asked quietly, knowing that the echo of her own voice would terrify her if she spoke any louder.
Charles look around at the different paths and lit each opening with a torch. Once he was done, he stepped
back and examined each tunnel. He pointed to the one on the far right. "That one. All the other paths seemed
to burst with life once I placed the torch. That tunnel.... it just didn't." Stephanie was confused at this
logic, to follow the darkest path, but she shrugged and push past Charles to go own the tunnel. After about
a minute of walking, the two could hear a distinct hissing sound that seemed to have no source. Stephanie
said it was coming from ahead of the tunnel while Charles thought it was coming from the entrance. "Can we
just ignore it? Please? Let's take a break for a moment and eat some food. I brought porkch- Ow! Did you
pinch me Charles? Not funny!" Stephanie frowned and glared at Charles, her face tense and sour. Charles'
face was of pure terror and shock. "What is it? Charles? Char..." Stephanie slowly turned behind her and
screamed, for there were 32 red, demonic, glowing eyes staring at her. "Steph... come towards me... slowly..."
Stephanie slowly backed away from the spiders, whimpering. "Let me deal with 'em." Charles stepped forward and screamed a war cry,
throwing himself at the spiders. He lunged at the nearest one and amputated its legs, soaking the ground in
slippery, warm blood. He quickly finished the spider off by stabbing it in the head, right between the eyes.
Two spiders launched on top of Charles, pinning him to the ground. "Don't kill these two! Get the other one Steph!"
Charles gasped, struggling under the weight of the two creatures. Steph took a stance, readied her bow, and
quickly fired three fast, powerful arrows into the chest of the remaining spider. Blood sprayed everywhere and
Steph stared down at Charles, concerned. He was sprawled out on top of both of them, crushing them but not killing them.
"Steph," he sputtered, "come 'ere
and give me a hand. We have our new mounts..." Stephanie stared at him, jaw dropped. "We're... riding them?!"
Charles rolled his eyes. "Yes! Now, come here!" Stephanie dashed over to him laid on the spiders while Charles
got off of them. "Lay on them and stay ready for anything. Press your weight on them but don't squash them."
Stephanie nodded and squeaked with surprise as the spiders struggled beneath her. Charles ripped two long vines
off of the wall of the tunnel and tied them to the throats of the spiders. They hissed in protest and Charles
punched them hard, causing them to whimper with pain. He handed Stephanie one of the vines and told her mount
the spider. Charles mounted his and lead the way down into the darkness of the tunnel, his mind slowly drifting
away as he got more violent and ferocious.

When they finally got to what seemed like the end of the path, it opened up into another large room. Charles
noticed a path opening on the roof of the damp, dark cave and he tortured their spiders until they meekly crawled
through the tunnel and brought their passengers with them. As they went up the path, Stephanie was deep in thought.
'Charles has gone mad. So violent and abusive... but it was a little funny to see the spiders whimper and beg for mercy,' Little
did Stephanie know that her own thoughts were turning dark and evil. Finally the path leveled out, and the spiders were
too weak to continue. Charles killed them with joy and made their deaths slow and painful, dismembering them and letting
them bleed out. He dunked his head in the puddle of blood that they left and laughed histerically, blood dripping from
his face. At first Stephanie was appauled, but then she started laughing like a lunatic as well, eventually dipping
her own face in the blood. "Haha! That was fun! Let's go murder- I mean, explore some more, shall we?" Charles held
Stephanie's hand in his own, and looked confidently into her eyes. Stephanie kissed his bloody cheek and they continued
on their "merry" way, unaware of what dangers lie ahead.

After walking for a few minutes, a mysterious, thick, gray fog began to slowly spread over the ground, shrouding
the pair in fog. "I can't see anything! Oh, whoops!" Stephanie squealed as she tripped over her own feet and she tumbled
to the ground. "Steph, you okay...?" Charles asked, but not with any real concern. His mind had drifted too far away to
show any affection. He only felt the burning passion for murder. Stephanie rolled her eyes and stood up to bursh herself
off. "Thanks for helping me up..." she muttered, making a face at Charles behind his back. They continued to walk until he stopped
suddenly, causing Stephanie to bump into him. "Watch out, jerk!" she screamed loudly, feeling a sudden pulse anger in her veins.
Charles paid no attention to her scream of rage as he listened intently for something. "I hear rattling... bones...skeletons!"
He clapped his hands quickly in excitement, thrilled by the thought. His joy was abruptly caught off by an intense pain in
his gut. He looked down to see a steady waterfall of hot, sticky blood coming from an arrow lodged in his stomach. "Ow..." he
muttered, throwing the arrow on the ground. Charles dropped his bow and arrows on the ground, forever to be lost in the fog. He told
Stephanie to do the same, saying archers were cowards that hid in the safety of their towers. Stephanie obeyed and equipped her
sword, ready for battle. Charles left his sword in its sheath, calling out for the skeletons to show their bony faces. Charles
took a few steps forward, but he was forced to go backwards after a storm of arrows were fired at him. Charles screeched in
pain as at least 10 arrows pierced his flesh, and with each arrow he yanked, a waterfall of blood gushed from his wounds. "Oh
my gosh, Charles! Sit down and let me take care of the skeletons, okay? I have a plan." Charles grunted and roughly sat down, about
to pass out from blood loss. Stephanie dropped to her stomach and started crawling in the fog, not knowing that the fog had
fumes in it which sped up the process of madness.

Once Stephanie was confident that she had crawled past the watching eyes of the dangerous skeletons, she slowly stood up,
stiff. She looked around, wary of her enemies. She heard the rattling of the bones and quietly stalked toward the source of the
sound. She came up behind the skeleton and ripped its skull off, leaving the rest of the skeleton to crumble and become a
heap of old, moldy bones. Stephanie placed the skull on her own head, admiring how it fit perfectly. Stephanie picked the
rest of them off, saving a skull for Charles. She walked back to where Charles was on the brink of death, and she handed him
the skull. "I got this for you. It looks really awes- Charles? Oh my gosh, Charles?!" Stephanie was scared of the thought
of losing Charles. She was on the brink of comple insanity and Charles was the only thing keeping her just a bit sane.
Stephanie grabbed 2 apples out of her pack and fed them to Charles. He suddenly burst to life, snatched he skull from Stephanie's
generous hands, and nodded appreciatively at her. "Hey, the fog is gone. What did you do to get rid of it?" Charles commented,
and he was right. The last whisp of fog was fading in the dim light of the tunnel. "I took out the threat. Sorry for not
letting you come join the fun- you were about to die. Maybe if we hurry there will be a creeper or an ender man!" Charles nodded
excitedly, and sped down the tunnel, not knowing that the fog had seeped into his open wounds while he lay vulnerable on the ground.

Finally the pair got to the end of the tunnel, and instead of a large cave, the tunnel only forked into two paths. The pair
knew that they had to split up, so Charles went to the right while Stephanie went to the left. Within moments, Stephanie was
horribly eaten to death by zombies, her corpse to forever remain withering away in the deep cave that she and Charles had stumbled
upon. Charles, on the other hand, was enjoying himself. A few spiders crossed his path and he quickly disposed of them, punching
one of them to death (leaving a large hole in that one) and suffocating the other one with its own legs (he stuffed the legs down far in its throat
so no air could go in or out). Charles had only an iota of sanity, of which he was soon to lose. He lost a large fraction when
he heard Stephanie's shrieks from the tunnel across from him, and he knew that she was going to die no matter what he did. Once the screams
stopped, Charles shrugged and continued along the tunnel he had chosen. After a while, Charles was in great pain. Not physical pain, but
mental pain. He craved murder so badly it hurt. Occasionally, Charles would stop walking entirely and just scream at the top of his lungs,
begging for a mob to come along, whether it was a creeper or just a simple chicken (he was hoping for the creeper). His wish was soon granted
when he heard a loud "ssssssss" behind him. Charles spun around quickly, his tongue lolling out from his mouth, craving the feel
of murder. In front of him stood a single creeper, and Charles chuckled. "Just one? ONE creeper? REALLY?! I asked for a CHALLENGE!"
Charles had lost all sanity and reason, and he lunged at the creeper. He grasped its throat and shook violently. Charles kneed the creeper
several times and held it against the wall while
he beat the creature to a pulp. Blood splattered everywhere, and by the time the creeper
was horrible mutilated, Charles
was soaked head-to-toe in blood. He breathed heavily, his eyes wild and his heart pounding. He cast a glance at the destroyed
corpse of the creeper and giggled. The giggle turned into a violent chuckle, which quickly escalated into a hysterical laughter.
Charles tumbled to the ground, his head splashing the puddle of sticky, warm blood of the creeper. The blood got into his mouth
and he choked on the blood, still laughing like a lunatic. The warm blood soon finished Charles off and he lay there, a mess lying
in a pool of sticky blood. If you were to stumble on Charles' body soon after he died, you would see his eyes, wide open with a mad
look. You would say that his once gray eyes were bloodshot and that he was corrupted. But no one would know what your sightings
would be, for you would die in that maze of tunnels just like Stephanie, Charles, and the other dozen explorers from six months ago did.
