NOTE: THIS IS JUST MY WAY OF DOING THINGS! I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS IS THE 'RIGHT' WAY TO SKIN! JUST SOME PERSONAL TIPS FROM ME TO YOU!
Loads of people have asked me to make one of these so I thought it was about time I got around to making it! Just so you know I don't skin very professionally so some of the tips here will probably be stone age compared to other skinners :P!
Step ONE!
Skinning Program
My favourite program to use is Paril's MCSkin3D (downloadable there) it's safe to use and user friendly so with a little tweaking you can suit it to your needs! :)
I try not to put too many skins on there at once, as sometimes it crashes if I do. Also, it's good to be tidy I suppose so I save my skins into My Documents x3
Step TWO!
My Own Templates
Now I don't believe in just giving someone a template to reshade and I don't really do it either but I always start with a base to start me off!
This is how my skins usually start :) BUT PLEASE do not just copy my shading :/ I've worked a very long time to develop my own shading style and all that hard work would be lost if someone went and replicated it ;o;!
Instead try making your own template, and developing your own shading style as you go! Don't forget to sign your template as I've done 'Crez', as it stops inexperienced skinners from stealing your skins :)!

Colour and Hue Shifting
This is probably the hardest part about skinning and I'm pretty sure I am the only skinner who doesn't use templates xD
Yeah I am a bit of a noob so what I do instead is colour pick... (yeah I am a noob!)
I basically use the HSVA colour wheel thingey ma jig as it's just what I understand the most x3
To colour you need to have a basic knowledge of how colours work I suppose and here's a little bit about them, I am by means no expert however!
Basics
When making a colour fade into another colour (hue shift)
Red (darker) -> Purple
Red (lighter) -> Orange
It's up to you by how much you wanna hue shift (this is an example of a large shift)
And this is gentle. So it really depends on what colour impact you wanna make to be honest :)
Orange (D) -> Red
Orange (L) -> Yellow
Yellow (D) -> Orange
Yellow (L) -> to Yellow! (try not to go into green! and bleach yellow whiter when lightening)
Green (D) -> Blue
Green (L) -> Yellow
Blue (D) -> Blue/Purple
Blue (L) -> Blue/Green
Purple (D) -> Blue (make sure to add more black)
Purple (L) -> Pink
Pink (D) -> Purple/Red (depending on what kind of pink you want)
Pink (L) -> White
(left) Magenta/purplepink (right) Pink/redpink

Now how do I hue shift you ask? Well I just adjuct the numbers at the HSVA interface
It's hard at first but I've had a lot of practice with colour so sometimes I just pick colours at random too xD
