Steve: It was dark, cold - no. Not cold. Not dark. It was nothing. Me. Swimming in and floating on nothingness. I couldn't remember what I was, where I had come from. All I knew, is that, I was here.

                                                                                                    But...

Then, there was a small light. Then another. Everywhere there was starting to be little sparks of color, like when a torch pops and creates little explosions. All of a sudden, the next thing I saw was a soft blue light coming from above. I tried to breath, but what I got wasn't air. Water... water? I swam upwards to the surface. How I knew how to swim, I don't know. I exploded out of the water, gasping for air. There was a little island in the distance, which I swam to. I scrambled onto the land and tried to catch my breath, resulting in me coughing up huge amounts of water, but when I finally did catch my breath, I layed down to recollect my thoughts. "Where did I come from?", "Who am I?", and most importantly, "Is this island inhabited?" Then it came to me. I remembered.

                                                                                           FLASHBACK:

Man: Steve, Steve. Steve! Wake up!

Steve, Narrating: I opened my eyes and looked up. It was my friend, Ben. We had been working on a medicine that appeared to heal cancer. "Hey man! Today's the our big day! A most important revolution in science," he said in his strong Swedish accent.

Ben: Do you want to do this or not? Come on Steve, we could be famous after this!"

Steve: What time is it?

Ben: Half- past 4.

Steve: P.M.?

Ben: No! A.M.

Steve: Oh gosh. I didn't say to get up THIS early. You're like a kid on Christmas morning.

Ben: I'm sorry, but I was too excited to wait for it. I couldn't sleep. You ready?

Steve: Nope.

Ben: Come on. Let's get some coffee.

(Steve and Ben go are sitting at a table, drinking coffee and discussing their plans.)

Ben: So how are we going to present it to everyone?

Steve: Don't count your chickens before they hatch, Ben. You know what happened to the girl who did that.

Ben: I know, but if it does work, then how do we present it to everyone? We can't just jump in and be like, 'Hey guys! We just found the cure to cancer!'.

Steve: True, bu-
(At this moment a nurse runs in.)

Nurse: Dr. Steve, we need help in room 114. Something's wrong with the patient.

(Steve, Ben, and the nurse walking to the patient's room.)

Steve: What is he doing?

Nurse: He seems to not be able to stop laughing, and sometimes he'll just stare at us and say, " We're done."

Ben: Creepy. Does he do anything else?

Nurse: He also says, " They will deminish and finally end a painful, biting death."

Steve: Wait, is this the one that helped with the research?

Nurse: I think so. Why?

Steve: Just, wondering.  By the way, what is your name?

Nurse: Alex Stanley.

Steve: Oh, ok. You're new here aren't you?

Alex: Yes sir.

Steve: Well, nice to meet you Alex.

(They arrive at the patients room.)

Alex: He seems to have calmed down now.

Ben: Yeah, maybe he's just going crazy. I wouldn't be suprised if he died soon.

Alex: It's funny, though. We did everything we could and he wouldn't calm down.

Steve: Yeah, that is fishy. But, the fact of the matter is, he's calmed down now. Just keep an eye on him and-

Patient: It's time.

Steve: Nevermind then. Have you tried-

Patient: Steve. It's, time.

Steve, Narrating: At this moment the lights went out. When they came back on, we weren't in the patients room. We weren't even  in the hospital. We were in our city, Safety. But it was quiet. The best I can explain it is 'dead'.

Alex: Is this, our city?

Ben: No, it can't. How could- no. It's not.

Steve; But could it be? You know what, uh, he, said.

Ben: You are way too calm, Steve. You know something. Was there any diary that he kept, or medical records?

Steve: No. But I can't help but feel that I've been through this before...

Ben: Well, try to think of something fast, because I think what the patient said has come-

Steve: Where's Alex?

Ben: More importantly, who is that?

(There is a shady figure in the now foggy street.)

Steve: Look.

(Written on the street are two words: Follow Him.)

Ben: Should we? I mean, what do we have to lose?

Steve: Either the end of the world has just happened, or we are the crazy ones. So either way, what do we have to lose? For all we know, he might even lead us to Alex. What do you think, Be- Ben?

(He searches for Ben, but is unable to find him.)

Steve, now trembling: What do I have to lose?

                                                                                (He walks toward the figure.)

Steve: It was, you?

Patient: (Chuckles) Yes.

Steve: Who are you?

Patient: Oh, right. You still don't remember. If only you wouldn't have trusted me.

Steve: I don't even know who you are!

Patient: Do you?

Steve: No, no. How could I remember.

Patient: How could you forget?

Steve: But how could I remember...

Patient: I left you clues. The application form. The patient report. The messages in every piece of paper or object you saw. The were everywhere.

Steve: And now I remember your name, even.

Herobrine: I finally beat you, Steve. You finally made the one mistake you could've ever made!

Steve: Now what will you do? Go back to your brothers, and tell them that you destroyed Earth finally, and that's it? Sounds pretty lousy to me.

Herobrine: No. I still have one more thing to do. Get rid of you.

Steve, narrating: At that point everything began to go dark. But there was one more question I had to ask.

Steve: Before I go, I have one more question.

Herobrine: Say on.

Steve: Where are Ben and Alex?

Herobrine: They're dead.

Steve: I know they can't die.

Herobrine: Then I will tell you the truth. Not even I know. But if you find out, remember to tell me. Goodnight, Steve.

And now, I'm here. And I've told you all I remember.

But there was one more meeting with Herobrine, which showed me the resistance of a good heart. Shortly after I had swam to the island and recollected my these thoughts, he was there. Standing in the distance, he was there. Staring at me. The last and only words he said to me was, "Well, done Steve. You beat me again. And sadly, You're the last human on Earth, which puts you in a tight place. Good luck surviving the beginning of the world."

It has now been two years and twenty-three days since I arrived on this island. And I started looking looking for my friends one year and twenty-six days ago. Why? There's a clue that Herobrine left me last time he talked.

"You're the last human on Earth," he said. But Alex and Ben can't die. How do I know this? We fought this battle before, together. I remember.

"You're. The last. Human. On. *Earth*." The clue he left me was this: On Earth. Our Universe isn't he only universe with life.
He's scattered two of the last people on Earth across the Universe, and in some way, for some reason, he wants me to find them. And I will. We are the last humans, and we will always find a way to survive. And we will never give up.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Well, it was EXTREMELY fun writing this story. So, I will be writing a sequel to this after the 'Life of Steve' contest is over. Ideas are welcome! If I find an idea that I like, then I will add a link to that person's account in the Sequel. Well it's been fun, but now it's over 'til next time. And, of course I will also write a prequel to this to further explain some of the events in this story. well, goodbye for now!

                - with best regards,
