So, this past weekend, I went to an anime convention in Boston- more specifically, Anime Boston 2013. Now, I realized ahead of time that the weapons policy was going to be more strict this year considering recent events but.....
Does this seriously look like a dangerous weapon to any of you? I'd like to hope not. It's a hunk of over sized foam pixels. I've taken a good few whacks at my friend while we were sword fighting with this thing- there isn't anything threatening about it.
Now, even if it did look realistic or, heck, even if it was a real sword- HOW is that tiny orange clip supposed to suddenly make it safe to carry around? This blows my mind, I can't even explain it in coherent words.
I'm not sure what part of this experience drove me crazier- the fact that the handle got messed up and bent a little from the "peace binding" or the whole idea of binding the weapons with little plastic tags in the first place. I have another example, this was with a cosplayer I met at the event...
Obviously, I don't need to state that his axe is just a tad more realistic than my sword. So yes, it would be good to maybe put some sort of protection on it. But really, what is this tiny orange tag going to do? I've had this same conversation with some of the other con goers- and we all agreed that con safety was very important, but that this binding of harmless pieces of styrofoam wasn't the way to go about it. But that leaves the question- what is?
I've seen people try to bring stupidly dangerous weapons to conventions- REAL swords being one of those things. And of course immediately they were kicked out and not allowed back in. Common sense, right? So the rest of us have to have our swords and toy guns approved before we even enter, and afterwards they tag us. Shouldn't us being able to enter the building at all be enough to say that the weapons we're carrying obviously aren't real and aren't a threat to the public?
Well, I'm done with my piece for now. This is kind of depressing a bit for a first blog post. I think this is my first blog post at least.... I'm going to assume so as I can't remember doing so earlier. If you made it this far, thank you for reading, and please share with me your opinions on the subject matter.
Do you think the tags matter? Is there a better option?
