Hello, I am Irun4Iron and today I have with me and very good survival guide for SMP servers, single player and maybe even your first day on Factions!

FIrst thing you're going to need to do, which will help you out later, coordinates. You can open your coordinates by pressing F3 on your keyboard (For Windows PCs, I don't know how to do it on a mac) Coordinates tell you where you are on the map. Coal can be found anywhere on the map, if you're in the mountains without grass, you may be able to spot some, however coal is most common below layer 50. Which would be y: 50 or lower in your coordinates. [1.8 Coordinates look like this (Example): "XYZ: 0 64 0)] 64 is my Y in that example. Iron can be found anywhere under layer 40, which would be the middle coordinate on your Y. Gold can be found anywhere below layer 30, which, again is Y:30 on your coordinates. Redstone, which is used to create amazing redstone inventions, is found below layer 16. (Y:16) Lapis Lazuli which is a good decoration blocks, or now used to enchant items, can be found below layer 30, but most common below layer 12. An interesting thing though, is that Lapis and Diamonds have the same rarity, but Emeralds are more rare. They are found ONLY in the "Extreme Hills"  biome, (below layer 30) which you can find by using your coordinates. Somewhere under your XYZ, should be a biome. The Biome is important, because some biomes have different rules, for example, Slimes only spawn in swamps on a FULL MOON, same with witches. Witches only spawn in their huts during night. Deserts have an increases mob-spawn rate, mainly because of it's flat areas and big space. Plains biomes, Deserts, Jungles, Oceans and Mushroom Biomes contain special things. Plains and Desert biomes contain Villages. Villages contain Villagers, which you can trade with, many houses to shelter in, or break for materials, and mini-farms to collect food from. Desert villages used to be normal, but as of 1.7.10, they are now sandstone. Jungles contain Cocoa Beans, unlike any other biome, which can only be grown on Jungle Wood. You can use Cocoa Beans to Dye stuff, such as your dogs collar, or your armor. Jungles also have a Jungle Temple which contain loot, but there are also traps. Deserts also have it's own thing, a Desert Temple. Desert Temples also have traps. However there is a hidden room below the orange and blue stained clay. But be careful, the pressure plate in the room activates 9 blocks of TNT, and you ultimately die. Oceans contain an under-water fortress protected with the new mob Guardian, and Owned by 3 Elder Guardians, which you can kill and redeem 8 gold blocks for each of them. Mushroom Biomes are by far the most spectacular biome. Mushroom Biomes contain mooshroom cows, which you can milk with a bowl to get Mushroom stew. The biome also have Mushroom trees which you can destroy fastest with an axe, to get mushrooms. You can also shear the Mushroom cows to get 3-5 RED Mushrooms. The grass is also unique, it''s Mycelium which allows you to place mushrooms without it having to be night.

Surviving the First Night
The first thing you're going to want to do is find a biome with a tree. You will most-likely spawn next to one, but if you're unlucky you may have to travel to find a tree. Once you collect about 8 logs you are ready to get some tools. You need to make a Pickaxe and an Axe. Use the axe to gather up some more wood, until you have about 12 more logs. Now what you can do, is dig down a few blocks, or wander around to find a cave. Once you find stone, mine about 24 and upgrade your tools: Stone Sword, Stone Pickaxe, Stone Axe, Stone Shovel. If you are wondering around a biome with animals, look for some sheep. Sheep are very important for your first night in the Minecraft world! You can get 3 wool from sheep, which can be used to make a bed and sleep through the night with no mobs in sight. Minecraft days are 20 minutes long, so you have 20 minutes to find sheep, and upgrade your tools. However Minecraft Nights are only 10 minutes long, so if you find no sheep, you can surround yourself in a box, or hide in a hole underground.

The Second Day
On the Second day, you want to get a bed if haven't already, and start building a shelter. Any biome is fine, but I prefer Plains or a Forest. To keep mobs away find some coal, and make torches, although you may have a bed, sometime, you may want to fight mobs, or accidentally run into one. Make a shelter out of wood, or cobblestone, if you're on SMP, I prefert Cobblestone, so no troll can burn it down, or blow it up, Cobblestone, surprisingly has a high blast resistance. After you make your house, you need necessities in the house. You'll need a crafting table, a furnace, a double chest for storage, and a bed. Those are your 4 basic necessities. Adding torches and windows is always a good idea, without windows you can tell the time of day, and if there is a dangerous mob nearby. Without torches mobs are able to spawn in your house, which is not good.

The Third Day
On the third day you should go mining, use your coordinates to remember the location of your house, and find a nearby cave, ravine, or just dig down. People say never dig straight down, but the chance of landing in lava, or a deadly situation is less than 5%, pretty slim. I recommend you dig until you find a cave, or land on Y:12, lava layer and diamond layer. If you do land in lava and die, you will respawn at your bed, so only bring a few Pickaxes, some wood, and a Sword. Remember the mining layers earlier, If you mine on Y:12, all the lava you will run into will be below you. Y:12 is also the most common layer for diamonds.
In order to mine Diamond, Gold and Emeralds, you need an Iron Pickaxe. You can obtain this by smelting 3 Iron Ore in a furnace and getting Iron Ingots, which you use to make the Iron Pickaxe. Mining is very important because you can obtain resources valuable for many things. Armor, Tools, Decoration, More efficient thing such as Mob Spawners or Farms, ect. As you are mining mobs might be common, but that's okay. To fight them, use you WASD keys to strafe them. If you're fighting a creeper run to him. hit him once or twice, and back up with the "S" key. The creeper will either blow up or repeating this strategy will kill him. Coal is used for fuel and found in LARGE Veins, so if you find too much coal on your mining trip, covert it into Blocks, which is made with 9 coal. Iron is found in veins of 1-8, on rare occasions you may find more, which is 2 veins of Iron Combines. Gold is used for Powered rails, which can make you move fast on a minecraft, but they must be powered by a redstone signal. Gold really has no used, but it's a good decoration blocks, and you can make golden apple with ingots for blocks to find bosses such as the Elder Guardian, the Wither, or the Enderdragon in  the far future. While mining, if you confront a tall, purple/black monster, don't look at it. If you want to kill it, find a wall, put a block over your head, so you can't jump, and attack the mob's feet, The endermen won't be able to attack you, which is good because they do a lot of damage and have double health of the normal mob. On occasion they will drop an Enderpearl, which is good, you can throw it, and wherever it lands, you will teleport to that spot. The time you mine is up to you, you are not limited, but only by your wood count. Once you run out of wood, I'd make a run for the surface. Once you run out of wood, you cannot make tools, or weapons, or armor, or anything. Mining is the most important part of your Minecraft Journey.
The next day
Once you're done mining and you find your home again, smelt all your resources and place them in your chest. The next thing you need is to get a farm, you may have gotten a carrot or potato from a Zombie while mining, which you can make a farm out of that, or you can punch some grass, and collect seeds. To make a farm, you need to craft a hoe, and there needs to be a water source within a 5 block radius for the crops to grow. NOTE: YOU CANNOT PLACE WATER BELOW THE CROPS! THEY WILL NOT GROW. When you tild the grass, it will turn into farmland which you can place crops on. You know it is saturated when the farmland's color darkens greatly. When your wheat, carrots or potatos are done, it will have a very Yellow, or very green color. When you see an abundance of crops at the same stage, they are most likely done. Wheat plants will always drop 1 wheat, and multiple seeds. Carrots and Potatos will drop 1-3, but more if you use a Fortune Pickaxe which you can obtain with enchanting, which is difficult to get. You can eat the carrots regularly and will fill up 3 hunger bars (1.5 meat sticks) you can eat a potato which will fill up 1 hunger bar (.5 meat sticks) or you can cook the potato and get a baked potato which will fil 5 Hunger Bars (2.5 Meat Sticks) You can make bread with 3 wheat, which will also fill 5 Hunger Bars, (2.5 Meat Sticks) Food is very important unless you're playing on Peaceful setting. On the Peaceful setting you don't lose hunger, you regenerate healthy very quickly, no mobs spawn, and it's really easy. If you've been playing on Peaceful, you set it there, because normal difficulty is Easy Mode. The harder the mode, the more food you need, the more monsters spawn, the more damage monsters do, and the slower you gain health back. You can only gain health back if you have full health, or are only missing 1 meat stick. Otherwise you will not regenerate.
On your own.
If you follow of the guidelines and stuff I have typed in the previous paragraphs, you should be good, you can refer to this if you're in a  pickle, or need help. You can ask questions, because I am a Minecraft Nerd and know 99.99% of everything in the game, and probably missed sutff. I tried to put down the most important stuff, but when you knoweverything, you will be typing until next month, Another reason this isn't 100% is because I have to go somewhere and by the time I get back, the contest will be over. I wrote all the important stuff down, and if you have a question feel free to ask in the comments section below

Hope this helped, if not ask your questions,
