The Cat Case

It was the year 1943, the year of crime and war, and city New York was never a more dangerous place. A giant crime wave had just recently broke out, throwing the entire city into a state of fear and worry. Plus, with the police force being so distracted with the war, there was no one to find and stop these criminals.

This was where I came in. My name was Adrian Cater, the cat, and my owner and I were privite detectives, but my clients were all animals, while my owner’s were normal humans. Together we were the best and most famous detectives in all of New York.

My adventure began like this: one day when my owner was out and I was sitting alone in our stuffy office, I was approached by a very lovely client. She was a slim rich-looking white cat with a shining collar and bright blue eyes.

“Oh,” she said upon noticing me. “Is the detective, uh, Adrian Cater, in the house?”

“At your service sweetheart.” I replied, “Who wants to know?”

“My name is Rose Catvile. My brother has been catnapped!”

“Your brother, eh? Catnapped? Any ideas who done it?”

“No, but the cat-napper left this note.”

I took it from her paw and read:

If you care about your brother’s life then pay a ransom of $500,000 by next week. Come alone, tell no one.

-P.K

P.S If you're looking for me I’ll be at the Beloved Beer Bar.

“Gee, you do seem to be in a pretty pickle.” I said.

“Any idea about who this P.K fellow is?” She asked with a voice full of worry.

“P.K, otherwise known as Precious Kitten, is the biggest kitty crime lord in all of New York! How do you not know that?”

Her white face seemed to go a shade whiter as she said, “Crime lord? Oh, my poor brother!”

“Hey don’t worry sweetheart, I’ll help you get him back.”

“You will? Oh, thank you!”

“You don’t have to thank me, it’s my job! Well, now,” I said “You best be getting home, a pretty lady like yourself needs some shut-eye, and don’t worry about your brother. I’ll make sure he’ll get home safely.”

“Yes, I suppose your right, well goodbye and thank you.”

I then escorted her to door and bade her goodbye and afterwards I got myself all tucked and curled up in my cat bed. Soon I fell into a deep slumber.

The next day I woke early to the sound of birds chirping. Sometimes I really hate birds, I thought to myself. After I nice breakfast from my owner, I set to work.

“First stop, the Beloved Beer Bar,” I said to my self, as I left the apartment.

The walk has a very nice one, considering I got lost multiple times, and by noon I reached my destination.

The Beloved Beer Bar was a very small place and usually buzzing with people. But today there seemed to be no one there. I entered. The interior was very cozy and welcoming with a bright fire dancing in the fireplace. I then observed a face I recognized from some wanted posters around town; it was the face of P.K beside two of his Buff hedgehog henchmen. I walked over to him and sat down across from him.

“Are you P.K?” I asked him.

“Yea, who wants to know?” He replied with a very swag accent.

“Adrian Cater, private detective. I’m here to find a Miss Catvile’s brother who you’re holding for ransom.”

“Ah yes, Mr. Catvile, I remember him.”

I struck the floor with my paw, “Where is he? Answer!”

“Let me think, Oh I seem to have forgotten. Perhaps a little gift will remind me,” he said with a broad smile appearing on his face.

“Fine,” I sighed, “Here, is this enough?” I drew a ball of yarn out the bag that was on my back and passed it to him. He grabbed it eagerly.

“Indeed it is, now.” He gestured to the two henchmen standing on both sides of him, “If you please gentlepets.” The two well-built hedgehogs approached me, and then throwing a bag over my head they knocked me out.

I woke in what felt like days later in a giant warehouse. Oh, my head! I thought, Where am I? Then I heard a not very comforting voice.

“Ah, so you’re finally awake,” said P.K as he stepped out of the shadows.

“Where am I?” I asked, massaging my poor skull.

“You're in the H.Q of the biggest kitty crime lord in the city!” He gestured around him while saying this.

“So, this is the place. Kind of pathetic, eh? I mean like when I hear crime lord’s H.Q I image something a bit more spectacular and not some dump.” I paused for a moment, then said, “Maybe that is why you need the money, because your broke! Ha, and I always thought that the greatest cat crime lord was also the richest cat in the city! Unless you're not the greatest crime lord, Precious.”

Then P.K as fast as lighting lashed out and scratched my face, causing blood to trickle down.

“Don’t call me that!” He practically screamed.

“Ok, ok sorry,” I replied sarcastically, “You don’t need to get so worked up!”

“Let’s just get to business, shall we!” He snarled.

“Fine, where is Mr. Catvile?”

“He’s safe, very safe and if you want him to continue to be safe you’d better have the money!”

“I have it! But your not getting it until I get Mr. Catvile!”

“Fine,” he said, “Bring him in.” Then two big dogs appeared out of the shadows leading a young gagged cat. “Here he is, now the money.

While keeping eye contact with P.K, I reached into my bag and pulled out a brown case. I looked at the crime lord for a moment longer, then slid the case across the floor towards him. P.K picked it up and looked inside. He seemed to be satisfied.

“Thanks for doing business,” he said, smiling, “But now, unfortunately, you both have to die.”

“What!” I spat out in shock.

“Hey it’s nothing personal,” he said pushing the fugitive towards me, “It’s just you know too much and I cannot risk any information getting out.”

“Villain,” I snarled.

“It’s just the way crime works. Caio!” He turned around and walked off. Just then even more henchmen stepped out of the shadows and surrounded us.

I went over and un-gagged Mr. Catvile, “ Hey, you alright?”

“Yeah, for now at least. Thanks.” We then noticed the beasts closing in on us.

“Looks like we have to fight our way out. Can you fight Mr. Catvile?”

“Call me Tom and indeed I can.”

“Good, well it’s now or never.” I said.

“On three! One, two, three!”

We attacked claws flailing everywhere. The opponents were clearly surprised at our attack, but nevertheless they didn’t let their guard down. First we took out a couple of dogs with a back-paw kick, then a hedgehog and a buff cat. By then we had made an opening and dashed away after P.K.

P.K had clearly been alerted of our escape because we found him in a run towards the door.

“Quick!” I said, “Before he gets away!” We ran towards him as fast as our paws could take us.

P.K ran up to a door and began to bang on it. “Hey open up!” No sooner than he said it, the door was opened by a black and white cat.

“This way boss!” he said.

P.K ran past the cat down the street without uttering a word.

“Hey what’s wrong b-” Before he could finish speaking I struck him down.

“Tom,” I said, “Get the police!”

“On it!” he said with obedience and ran.

I too started running, but in the direction of P.K. “I’m coming P.K,” I said to myself and picked up speed. So, I was almost flying rather than running and soon caught up to him.

“Ah, stay away!” P.K wailed as he ran. Then suddenly he made a sharp turn into an ally.

I slowed down and followed him in and there in front of me was P.K trying to scale a fence.

“Ha, looks like your stuck!” I laughed.

“It’s not funny! I’m afraid of heights!” he wailed.

“Ha, let me help you,” I said, pulling out a pair of paw-cuffs. I got him down from the fence, cuffed him and then took him to the police who had just arrived.

“Thanks for your help Adrian,” said a police pug with a police hat on. “With P.K behind bars his crime empire will soon collapse and the city will sleep well tonight know that one of the crime lords have been brought down.”

“Your welcome officer,” I said with pride. “It brings me pleasure serving the city.”

“Well I best be getting this rascal to his new home, Bye.” With that he walked away dragging the once great crime lord behind him

All was now done, with P.K behind bars and Tom reunited with his sister meant that it was time for me to go home. Ah, it feels good to have a job well done. I thought as I walked home. I can’t wait to get home and just sleep. The city was now safer then it had been in a long time thanks to me and it was finally time for me to get my reward. So, after getting home and having a quick supper, I curled up into a ball and fell into a deep peaceful sleep.
