There's many mods out thereo quite a few in this website eveno but many fellow Minecrafters download the mod, then go "Oh waito how do I install it?" Specifically for new mods and the more extensive and perhaps incompatible mods, tutorials found online at other websites aren't always accurate, secure, or clean. So how do you mod Minecraft cleanly?

Just as you wouldn't install a new version of your OS without backing up your current one, you wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) install mods without first backing up Minecraft. This is a crucial part of 'clean modding'o and also one that can save you time and patience.

Apart from back-ups, clean modding means installing mods that are all compatible with each other. If you install Tekkit mods with Voltz mods, for example, or Minecraft Forge with Rigusami's Modloader, you'll get incompatibility and 'dirty modding.' This will make it difficult to uninstall things and you'll need to reinstall Minecraft every time you need to uninstall an incompatible or no longer wanted mod.

Well, you've got two options: one, you can use Magic Launcher, a tool available for free that allows you to set up different builds that contain any amount of mods; or, for the more advanced users, you can mod Minecraft yourself with WinRAR or 7-zip. Downloads for these tools are available in the Appendix section of this blog.

Once you've downloaded and installed Magic Launcher, you can use it just like the default launcher. Create a shortcut for it, pin it to your taskbar, and you're good to go!

Now, the first steps everyone should take with new launchers is to just test Minecraft normally. Open up Magic Launcher, enter your login details, click the 'Login' button, and make sure everything works as normal (note that the program may freeze for a couple seconds as Magic Launcher loads everything).

Once you've made sure that Minecraft is working as usual, exit out of it and open Magic Launcher again. If you wish to configure mod builds, click 'Setup'o the button above 'Options'o and click 'New'.

A completely blank mod configuration or 'build.'

You won't need 7Zip or WinRAR for this, so just download the mods and put them somewhere you have easy access to, like a folder on your desktop. Click the 'Add' button and select the .ZIP or .JAR mod, then click 'Open.' It'll add the mod to the mods list and you'll be able to remove it, replace it, or move it up and down (why we need this last feature only God knows). Your MagicLauncher screen should now look something along the lines of this:

Now before you go on a rampage and destroy all your modbuilds because you didn't understand the part about my external mods, I'll explain it. Instead of installing mods normally through the 'Add' menu, there are some mods that require you to install them directly on the fileo like MATmos. If these mods have been registered with MagicLauncher (i.e. if they have a special info file) then they'll show up in the External Mods section. Otherwise, they won't show up and instead MagicLauncher will tell you that the minecraft.JAR file has been "Modified!" on the top right.

After that, simply click 'OK,' enter your login details, and click 'Login.'

Just a word of warning before I go ono this method requires either 7Zip or WinRAR, both of which can be found in the Appendix. I this tutorial, I'll be using WinRAR.

So for the more adventurous of you, there is another way to install mods: you configure the minecraft.JAR file manually. In order to do this, you'll have to organize yourself quite well to avoid frustration.

So the first step: download mods. I recommend downloading them to a folder or filespace designated particularly for mods; this way you can find them easily and will not have to rummage through your entire Downloads folder just to find ModLoader.

I also recommend backing up your minecraft.JAR file as vanilla (without any mods installed) and before installing a new mod. This way if the mod is corrupt or messes up your files then you can just use the backup minecraft.JAR.

So once you've downloaded the mod, right-click on it and select "Open with WinRAR." You should get a screen like this pop up.

Click 'Extract To' and just select doneo the file name and configuration that the program has already chosen should be appropriate in most cases. Once it's finished extracting, keep the folder window open and close the WinRAR window.

Click the Start button at the bottom of the screen and type this in the search bar: "%AppData%" (without the quotes, of course). A folder will open up. Double-click ".minecraft" and then "bin," then open minecraft.JAR with WinRAR. Go back to the folder, copy minecraft.JAR and save it somewhere safe. Now select everything in the WinRAR window of the mod and drag it onto the WinRAR window of minecraft.JAR.

Once you've done this, test Minecraft. If it doesn't work, you've probably done something wrong or need Forge ModLoadero look on the mod's webpage or forum thread. If you do indeed need FML, look below for installation instructions.

ModLoader can be installed just like any other mod; in fact, once you've done this, it'll be far easier to mod Minecraft. So repeat the steps highlighted above with ModLoader. As soon as it's done moving, close both WinRAR windows and go to %AppData% again. You'll see that many things have changedo for example, you may see the 'mods' folder. To install mods with FML, just drag and drop the .ZIP or .JAR into the 'mods' folder and you're good to go!

If you've messed up along the way, and somehow forgot to back up your minecraft.JAR, all you need to do is go to %AppData%, select .minecraft, and press the Delete key on your keyboard (or right-click it and press delete). Then open up MInecraft and select Options. Click Force Update and log in. Your folder should be back to normal as soon as the download is complete!

1. Forge ModLoader

2. 7Zip

3. WinRAR

4. MagicLauncher

Thanks to all the modders and software developers out there who made this possible!
