Section: The jungle
17th of May, 1851
Just recently I reached what I can only assume to be the stem of all the structures I have seen thus far. I can barely describe what it is that I saw; an immense structure that towered almost at the height of the trees surrounding it. The ruins and even the larger temples are dwarfed by the size of this central building. Its large shadow was cool, it shielded me from the Sun’s heat and gave me a clear vision of itself as well. Its base was supported by heavy pillars of stone claimed by vines and other foliage. They reached up to the upper levels which were covered in ornately chiseled windows, where they crawled their ways inside to escape the thick jungle air. Parts of the structure appear to have small pieces of gold placed in them, like crumbs leading to the unraveled story. The pathways were laid with slabs of colored stone, and grand staircases carved their ways up the structure and throughout the clearing. I’ve not yet dared enter the building, but with some rest, I will venture inside tomorrow with a renewed spirit for adventure. Whilst waiting, I explored the surrounding area and took note of the other buildings and ruins. The pathways, while worn and even lost in some especially dense regions, traverse much of the clearing and connect the many ruins nearby. Most seem to be remnants of homes or workplaces; as to what these ancient beings did as a profession is beyond me. I’ve made rough sketches of some of these buildings. Some of the structures held artifacts that I did not see myself qualified to carry with me. Perhaps some future traveler, perhaps someone I guide here, will be able to retrieve them and treat them with the delicacy they require. At this point I haven’t a clue what I will find inside, but I could not be more ecstatic.
