You want to create your own texture pack? Great to hear; you've come to the right place!

(I know there's no pictures, but I'll get them as soon as possible!)

Part 0: What you need to download

Let's get right to it. The one thing you need before you evar create a texture pack is an image editor. So, I'd recommend using Paint.NET. It's free to download, and is easy to use. You can download it here: http://www.getpaint.net/

In order to extract certain files by first opening .zip files, you need 7-Zip. WinRAR works too, but it will constantly remind you that "WinRAR is not free". Download 7-Zip here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

Part 1: Extracting your texture pack files

Once you've got everything downloaded, we can get started. For Windows 7 (and Windows 7 only), open up Windows Explorer and type %appdata% in the address bar. If you did it right, you should see the folder '.minecraft'. Open it, and then from there, open up the folder 'bin' using 7-Zip.
Now you can open up the file 'minecraft-1.2.5'. Preferrably in your Documents, make a folder for all of your texture packs if you haven't. Once you've made it, open the folder and make a new one named 'Minecraft Default'. Once you're done, copy ALL of the files from the 7-Zip window into the folder named 'Minecraft Default'.
Things can get a bit tricky from here. In the same folder, there's an icon two icons to the left of the help icon. Click the arrow beside it, and hit 'Details'. From there, you should see the word 'Type' between 'Size' and 'Date modified'. By rolling over it, you should see an arrow to click on. Once you've clicked on the arrow, check the box 'CLASS file'. Only CLASS files should be shown. Delete ALL of them. They are useless in this case. Next, uncheck 'CLASS file' and you should be left with the important files. From here, do NOT modify this folder. You can copy it into your texture pack folder to create texture packs whenever you want. On that note, go back to the folder with 'Minecraft Default'. Right click on the folder and hit 'Copy'. Right click anywhere below it, and click 'Paste'. You should now have a copy of the folder in there. This one you can rename to the name of your texture. Congratulations, you're past the hardest part! I hope it all made sense to you!

Part 2: Editing terrain.png

Go ahead and open up terrain.png in your texture pack folder with Paint.NET. If you're not familiar with Paint.NET, check out their tutorials first? Optionally using this guide here, draw in your preferred textures. Once you're done or want to take a break, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the S key. Check the box '32-bit', and hit OK. Use Ctrl + S often so you don't lose your work!
