Hello dear Planet Minecrafters owners of minecraft servers,
I will start a small guide to owners and creators of minecraft servers, today's special is "OP" and how you should use it correctly!
OP>RANKS
The "fast" way to setup your staff on your server is by giving every staff member OP, we all know that, but it might not be the safest way to do such, since all of them are ranked in the same line, for the server, all of them have the same rights over each other. This is a common error and that's why I write this post, OP's are (For the server at least) all people that have access to the console and that OPerates the server, so a "moderator" in this kind of "ranking" system (in which everyone is OP) can ban the owner without any complaints by the server (no, the console doesn't know how to diferenciate between a moderator and his beloved owner if both have OP)
Now, the "best" way to setup your staff is by using a rank system with a permissions plugin such as GroupManager (part of Essentials suite) PermissionsEX (PEX) bPermissions or similar. To decide which permissions plugin you should use, try checking with all the plugins you have installed and see if they are all compatible with your permissions manager. I've used GroupManager on my server and i've got not much troubles so far.
The ranks
If you opted for the "best" way to setup your staff, using a rank system, then the work might get harder, you have to choose between the plugins you have, the ranks you have in mind and which permissions go to each one.
This is probably the hard part of setting up a server (that's why most of the people jumps it) because for more plugins you have, more lines of "code" you have to setup.
The most common rank system I've seen so far is this:
- Owner --> All permissions and ranked above of the Co-Owner (inherits him/her) in order to controll him/her
- Co-Owner --> All permissions but ranked BELOW of the owner, so that he can't ban/kick or mess with him/her
- Admin --> All permissions of essentials and fun plugins but restricted on block loggers and such (so that he can't delete the logs)
- Senior Moderator --> BanIP, Change his gamemode, Teleport freely to anyone, vanish himself and permissions like such ONLY for himself
- Moderator --> Ban, kick, mute, jail, TPA (which is also allowed to normal players) and fly around
Each rank inherits the rank below, so that it gets all the permissions from it and also has "power" over it.
What if I decide to give everyone "OP"?
An operator can do the following:
- Ban everyone (including other operators and such)
- Stop the server
- Clear logs from block loggers
- Rollback the server to a "default" state
- Grief with worldedit or even by hand using lava and creative mode
- OP ANYONE that he wants
- Delete schematics (the most common way to save stuff)
- Be a griefing god.
- Much, MUCH more!
So, if you wanna run the risk, be my guest, I just wanted to warn you.
A diamond it's the shiny way to say "thanks" :D / Join the Delta Team server NOW! read more *here*

Sadly, my other blog didn't count with the same luck :/

So I guess what I'm saying is, you could open the article by suggesting that folks get that plugin, so that they can start by not needing many admins in the first place, so many server owners won't even need to think about managing permissions unless their server grows huge.
Thanks for the effort. :) There are a lot of bad server owners out there, and players pay the price.
it sets up a basic 1 group permission.yml file for you then dowloads it
