How to make your server popular with good quality.

Today I will show you some of the most important steps of making a big, popular server with good community
Before you even start a server you need to know that for the beginning of it, you will need to spend some money on Host, website etc. And creating a quality server will cost you a lot of time.
First of all:
The Host
Do NOT use your computers to host a server, it will be laggy and most of the people will leave 5 minutes after they joined. You need to find a good Minecraft hosting company and get them to host your server. Remember this: The cheapest isn't always the best! The cheapest hosts are probably with bad bandwidth, machines and support. After you found a good company you need to see where the machines are located. Choose the closest one to your country (Example: You live in US so you need to order a machine that is in USA, not Europe). You need to see they're plans as well - Don't go for they're cheapest plan (Example: 512 MB RAM). That plan is mainly for vanilla servers and is for maximum of 5-7 players. For a bukkit/spigot server you will need at least 1 GB RAM for 10-15 players with several plug-ins. You also need to see what kind of CPU does the machines of that company have. You don't want a machine with Intel Pentium, because that will make your server to respond slower and will cause lag. Choose something like Intel 5 or if you have a bigger budget: Intel 7 or Xeon E3. Some good minecraft hosting companies: MCProHosting, BeastNode, ProfessionalXen
After you got a good host, it's time for you to start your server.
Starting the server
You need to choose what type of server you want it to be: Vanilla, Bukkit, Spigot, FeedTheBeast, Tekkit etc. (Note: For Feed the beast, Tekkit and other mod-packs like that, you will need more RAM). After you choose what type of a server you want it to be, you need to start setting it up. Choose basic plug-ins, nothing too fancy or resource heavy. Start with this plug-ins: WorldEdit, WorldGuard, Vault, GroupManager, Essentials, NoCheatPlus. Remember to configure every plug-in so it fits your needs. You can configure them by editing the config.yml in the plugin folder. After you've setted up your plug-ins, you need to build a spawn. The spawn building is one of the most important builds on your server. That's the first place where new players spawn and you don't want them to spawn in a room full with signs and bad looking. If you can't make a spawn yourself you can download from the internet(Not recommended) or find good builders, which can build it for you.
After you got your plug-ins and spawn setted up, you need a good Staff crew.
Recruiting a Staff crew
You will need a couple of moderators and 1-2 Admins. You need your Staff mature, helpful and it needs to have knowledge about owning a server. Don't search for Staff members in PMC, because you will probably some immature kids which only want to grief or don't even have an idea what they are doing. My best Tip of searching for Staff members is just looking at your community. If you see that some player is very helpful, mature and can control himself, you can promote him. And remember: Staff needs to help the players, not grief and troll. If you do that, every player that joins your server will leave. It will be good if a Staff member is on All the time, so it watches over the players.
After you made all that it's time to choose what type of game-play you want on your server.
Do you want it to be a prison, faction, creative? It all depends on you, but here is a warning: Players like unique game-types, not just basic factions with a couple of mini-games. If you want your server to be unique, you will need to code a couple of custom plug-ins. If you don't know how to code, you should find a good programmer who can do that for you. If you can't code and you can't find a programmer, you can just try mixing plug-ins to create something unique
After everything is done, it's time to grow a community.
Advertising
Growing a community will always be hard but I'm going to try to give you the best Tips for it. Youtube is the best way to advertise your server. You need to find Youtuber with around 500+ subscribers who can make an intro (or let's play) on your server. If you do that your server will definitely get more players. You also need to add your server to about every server-listing website out there in Google. That will boost your player's count. One of the best websites for advertising your server is PlanetMinecraft. With each bump (each 24 hours) you will get around 5-10 new players on. Be sure to install Votifier on your server as well. That plug-in will give player's rewards for voting for your server and that way it will boost the player's count. You need to make sure every player that joins your server, needs to be welcomed there. Give them start items, give them a tour - make sure that they will stay. Though, the best way of advertising is the word of mouth. If a player joins and likes it, he will tell 2 of his friends, those friends will tell 2 of they're friends and it so goes on. Make sure every player enjoys playing.

But i belive it's better to have a good amount of mature Staff even at starting the server so they can look after the player's when you aren't on, add new features so player's keep coming and not leaving and overall - keeping the peace and fun on your server. Of course for some people it would be better if they control they're servers on they're own without aditional help (I'm that kind of a guy as well) because you need to look after your Staff as well. If they are abusing they're power, if they are good doing they're job and etc.
