I went on Minecraft today to check on something on a server, and was mystified when I read the message: 1.2.4 Update. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't hate updates. I anjoy it when something new comes off the shelf and we have a new feature and new items to work with. But as I read through the list of items, I lost even more faith in Updates. I understood the 1.2.2 Update which fixed some crucial bugs, but the 1.2.3 Update lost me a bit. I - of course - foolishly upgraded, thinking that was a good idea. Which it wasn't really. So when 1.2.4 rolled along, and I noticed that it improves chat and adds new sandstone, I decided to click the "Not Now" button. Because I just don't get it.
I am one of those people who has played Minecraft pretty much since its inception (although I took a 6-month hiatus once). I remember when Updates were widely anticipated and expected because the game hadn't reached its offical title of "Minecraft 1.0". We didn't have to worry about servers, plug-ins, mods, and all other extras like that - we just played the game. Updates brought new items, mobs, biomes, playing modes, and general amusement. But in the recent Updates, I've found that less has been done to really improve the player experience. Is letting a cat sit on a chest or bed so important that we have to add that in an Update? Is a new sandstone really necessary? Are armor outlines worth the hassle? Once I was on a server that went down until 1.2.3 - and it still isn't up and running. I'm losing faith in Jeb and his ability to do updates, which lead me to ask one more question...
Is the team behind these Updates getting sloppy? Or are players just getting fussy about bugs and such? I know, the chat in 1.2.3 is not the best, but making an update with that in mind just doesn't seem worth it all. and yes - bugs will be bugs. With every update there are more and more requiring more fixing. So, my solution: just receive criticism and suggestions and bugs, and then make one big update to 1.3! I have heard several of my friends already display disinterest in the new update, as have I. So, my big message to Minecraft Updaters: please stop making small updater because they are causing problems for no reason. Just save it all for one epic update!
