I recently started up a server of my own and I am now going to tell you how to improve your server and get it popular!
First of all is your server hosted?
If not then DO NOT advertise your server, your computer can get hacked. Instead get a hosted server as they are 24/7 with no lag, your players will prefer this.
Plugins?
What type of server is your server? Is it a factions server or a roleplay server? Or something else? Whatever you do make it unique, look up plugins to suit your server, don't get them because someone else has them get ones which suit your server, as a skyblock server would be pretty odd with a skyrim plugin? Also make sure the plugins are reliable, update them whenever they have a new update.
Spawn?
Is your spawn welcoming? Is the way out clear? The spawn is one of the most important features of your server, players will make up their mind whether they are going to stay on your server. Make sure it is not unfinished this will put players off.
Friendly staff?
Make sure all your staff are welcoming and friendly as players will like the server more if there are friendly staff.
Advertising?
The best places to put your server on are here on pmc, mcforums, minecraftservers.net and minecraft-server-list. You should get a ton of new players onto your server posting on these websites.
How to get my server to the top of these lists?
On the first day of each month most of these websites reset their votes, get all your players to vote and you should be able to get your server up there :)
